BREAKING NEWS! Why Pink Floyd? Prepare for Discovery, Immersion and Experience!

ORIGINAL POST: Why Pink Floyd? Why not? Whatever the answer, though, Why Pink Floyd is the name of the major new catalogue intiative for the legendary band, and while matters have sometimes been contentious between band members, they appear to be in perfect harmony for the launch of this campaign! The expansive collection is a three-tiered celebration of the work of Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright: Discovery, Experience and Immersion. These three lines are intended to offer sonically superior versions of these albums at every price point for every level of collector. The overall campaign encompasses CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, vinyl, an array of digital formats, viral marketing and iPhone apps. (The official site of the project also indicates that SACDs may be included!)

The Discovery discs are remasters of the original studio albums with no additional audio content.  These are designed as introductions to the band's core catalogue, and each of the 14 titles in the series adds a new booklet with complete lyrics. Every title has been digitally remastered by James Guthrie (co-producer of The Wall) and the renowned designer Storm Thorgerson is responsible for new artwork. These albums will also be available in a box set.

Experience editions expand classic Floyd albums in digipak format with second discs of unreleased archival material and expanded booklets. Three albums will be presented in this format: The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975) and The Wall (1979). Finally, those same three albums will be available in Immersion editions which appear to live up to that label! The Immersion editions are packaged in 29 cm square boxes with remastered, previously unreleased and audio-visual material, plus additional content or "swag" such as reproduced memorabilia, brand new graphics, art prints, collectors' items, lavish booklets and more. More titles in these two deluxe formats may be announced in the future.

Vinyl remasters are in the offing, and the titles will be offered digitally. A single-disc greatest hits anthology, A Foot in the Door, rounds out the entire collection and is designed as the perfect introduction for the Pink Floyd newbie. It will offer 16 tracks chosen by the band, remastered by Guthrie and designed by Thorgerson.

Why Pink Floyd launches on September 26 with the release of all 14 Discovery titles. On the same day, The Dark Side of the Moon will drop in the 6-disc Immersion format and the 2-disc Experience format. Fast forward to November 7, when Wish You Were Here will see release in the same formats as well as the new compilation A Foot in the Door: The Best of Pink Floyd. The series concludes on February 7, 2012, when The Wall gets the Experience, Immersion, vinyl and digital treatments itself.  Hit the jump to continue your Pink Floyd trip!

JOE MARCHESE (Editor) joined The Second Disc shortly after its launch in early 2010, and has since penned daily news and reviews about classic music of all genres. In 2015, Joe formed the Second Disc Records label. Celebrating the great songwriters, producers and artists who created the sound of American popular song, Second Disc Records, in conjunction with Real Gone Music, has released newly-curated collections produced by Joe from iconic artists such as Johnny Mathis, Bobby Darin, Laura Nyro, Melissa Manchester, Chet Atkins, and many others. He has contributed liner notes to reissues from a diverse array of artists, among them Nat "King" Cole, Paul Williams, Lesley Gore, Dusty Springfield, B.J. Thomas, The 5th Dimension, Burt Bacharach, The Mamas and the Papas, Carpenters, Perry Como, Rod McKuen, Doris Day, Jackie DeShannon, and Andy Williams, and has compiled releases for talents including Robert Goulet and Keith Allison of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Over the past two decades, Joe has also worked in a variety of capacities on and off Broadway as well as at some of the premier theatres in the U.S., including Lincoln Center Theater, George Street Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, and the York Theatre Company. He has felt privileged to work on productions alongside artists such as the late Jack Klugman, Eli Wallach, Arthur Laurents, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 2009, Joe began contributing theatre and music reviews to the print publication The Sondheim Review, and in 2012, he joined the staff of The Digital Bits as a regular contributor writing about film and television on DVD and Blu-ray. Joe currently resides in the suburbs of New York City.

  2. I think the name "Why Pink Floyd?" is apt. Another remaster treatment, albeit with extra stuff for three albums? I loves me some Floyd, but c'mon... I gotta buy another complete set with progressively stranger artwork? Blast my collector genes!

  3. Are you fracking kidding me?!?! EMI wants to buy dark side a fourth time and a third time for the rest. Bullshit!!!! I can't get a new album out of Waters or what's left of Floyd? No, of course not. Will we be getting archived shows? Original track listing for The Wall? The so-called unusable footage of The Wall concerts? "Raving and Drooling?".

    I'm not sure how Mr Guthrie can improve on the sound. Pink Floyd, like The Beatles recorded in the most technical studios in England, Abbey Road and their own Britannia Row. Damn you EMI.

    • I'm leaning on John's side here. How many times can James Guthrie remaster these albums? How will they sound different from the versions on the Oh By The Way box?

      EMI must be hoping to make back some of the cash they're losing on not having the McCartney catalog.

      • No idea. But the Immersion titles sound enticing enough to drop scads of money that would otherwise go to mortgage, food, college, insurance, and so on. EMI: Bankrupting America since Shine On.

      And how did you get away with only buying DSOTM 4 times.... LP, 8-track (dating myself there), second LP from wearing the grooves out on the first one, 1st edition cd, remastered cd from 1st box set, sacd for 5.1 mix, anniversary edition.

      Yes, I am an idiot when it comes to Floyd and Rush.

  6. SWEEEET!!!! A.friggin.bout time. I've given up hoping for a reunion album, so remasters with expanded material will be greatly welcomed! I hope we finally get "What Shall We Do Now?" on CD. And I wish Animals would stop being treated as a second class citizen. It's a great album! Give it an expanded edition too!

    My piggy bank (pun intended) should be replenished by then after the Queen remasters. Bring it on!

Yeah these will be expensive but the Immersion sets have stuff like the bits of Househould Projects that supposedly didnt exist.. and the quad mixes! and blu ray audio! and live archive material! and alternate mixes! I mean.. well 10 years ago I would have dropped a hundred a piece easy on a non cdr bootleg set with those tracks in not nearly as cool packaging. Piper doesnt need an immersion set. The 40th anniversary set did it plenty justice.. unless they finally would add Scream Thy Last Scream.
    By that time Roger will probably have a blu ray out of his recent Wall shows.

  12. It just came to me. What will really tempt me to re-buy ANIMALS (my favorite), would be the inclusion of the 8-track version of "Pigs On The Wing" with the guitar solo (I think by Snowy White).

  16. OK, everything seems to be fine for all fetichist floydians. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE WALL LIVE VIDEO IN EARLS COURT? they only offer "Short filmed extract of Earls Court Concert featuring animation"
    I will have to still love my bootleg DVD... DAMN!

  17. And, just like with the previous box set (Oh, by the Way) Delicate Sound of Thunder and P.U.L.S.E are left over. OK, these are live albums but so is the second disc from Ummagumma after all...
    And sorry, but I don't get the point of having the album at 448kbps if it appears at 640kbps in the same box!
    I was very excited, but after reading the article I'm very disappointed.
    I was hoping that the boxset for The Wall would contain a full live show on video. I already own the regular album, the live one, the movie on DVD... Just like any other fan 😉
    I did not buy Oh by the Way (and I don't regret it), and I think it will be the same this time!

  18. Agree with you Megatof, nevertheles multitrack versions are very special and might be spacial for Floyd, but I insist THE WALL LIVE VIDEO IN EARLS COURT must be included, we all fans know everything about our band and don't need more documentals which are easily found in youtube and so on

  19. I know it's a dying format (at least as far as rock music is concerned) but couldn't the 2 disc Experience version have had a hybrid SACD with the 5.1 mix included? They did it with DSotM. The only way to get a surround mix of WYWH is to shell out over £80 for the Immersion set. Some people are more interested in the music than scarves and prints, etc.

  20. I will buy TDSOTM and WYWH Experience 2CDs (in favor of the second discs) and I would like to buy Animals too if it would get the Experience treatment. Why it doesn't, that's a question. Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think it sold that bad.

  21. Finally they are giving us Floyd reissues worthy of purchace! I can't tell you how long I have waited for them to include bonus tracks and rare video! I will be buying the immersion box sets!!! Hope they give the immersion treatment to Atom Heart Mother, thats one of my favorites! Who am I kidding they are all my favorites!

  22. It would have been nice to see EMI and the band work just that bit harder and think this re-release through. The SACD surround version of Wish You Were Here will cost $35 if you are in the States or a minimum of $50 plus shipping and import costs, making this a very expensive purchase. They are alienating a number of fans by making the release this way. Why EMI was not consistent in its policy and released this album in surround in the same way as they did with the SACD release of the 30th anniversary album of Dark Side of the Moon is beyond me. I don't want to buy yet another re-mastered cd I want something that is truly different, special and above all affordable, which is the SACD surround version of not only this but most albums. EMI and other majors fail to step up to the mark and disappoint as they seem to be so out of touch with what many people do want, but as ever, we have no choice and are in their hands. This is equally disappointing given the current economic climate when many will not be able to afford expensive sets but want surround versions. Surround sound SACDs can be released as normal CD prices, so why not Pink Floyd's albums, they have done it once, why can't they do it again?

  24. oh by the way:
    Has anyone ever noticed (of course you have), at the very end of The Great Gig in The Sky, the last reverberation of the piano chord, there's a slight distortion before it returns in pitch...

    I've noticed it in previous reissues, and it's still there on this remaster, it must be in the original mix tape, I wonder they never managed to rectify that (maybe they wouldn't).

    About this reissue: the sound is great, I subscribe what others have writen before: not too loud, no loudness war here, the sound is full, rich, detailed, but not too sharp or squeakin, if you know what I mean.

    And BTW again, I LOVE THE DIGIPACK!!! wouldn't have it any other way!!! 🙂

    ..still have to listen to the live disc...

  25. And how about a glitch on "Breathe" from DSOTM (00:27)? On my old MFSL it's unaudible, but here on the 2001 remaster and also on 2003 anniversary version it's horrible...

  26. I can hardly notice anything wrong in Breathe... I own the Oh by the way-box version, and now the Experience edition... And BTW again, they seem exactly the same remaster to these year, I couldn't say I'm able to tell a difference between the two, because I can't...
