Jason Takes Hollywood: "Friday the 13th" Box Available from La-La Land

January 13, 2012 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

It's Friday the 13th, and there's a chill in the air out in the east. Perfect timing, then, for La-La Land Records to unveil their much-anticipated Friday the 13th soundtracks box set!

The beloved soundtrack label is presenting, for the first time, all of Harry Manfredini's music for the first six films in the long-running slasher series, remastered and restored from original source elements. Much of this material is being heard on disc for the first time, a definite treat for fans of the series. Featuring beautifully designed artwork inspired by the original poster key art for each film and an in-depth 40-page book of liner notes, this limited box - at 1,300 copies - is a frightfully good add for the discerning horror score fan.

Learn more after the jump!

The classically-trained, jazz-influenced Manfredini had only one film score under his belt when he was approached to score Friday the 13th, a low-budget flick about the fictitious Camp Crystal Lake, the promiscuous teens who occupy the campgrounds and the mysterious killer who hacks them up. But his eerie, Hermann-inspired style was the perfect complement to Jason Voorhees, the hulking, undead camper who drowned in Crystal Lake thanks to the neglect of some promiscuous counselors. The composer followed Jason through his evolution from a decaying corpse to the iconic, hockey-masked, machete-wielding monster on celluloid, and was a mainstay of the series through 1986's inconceivable sixth installment!

All six scores were restored from source elements discovered in the vaults at Paramount Studios as well as Manfredini's personal file. (The scores were meticulously reconstructed, including the scores to the third and fourth films, which were largely recycled from scores to previous installments.)

Fans of the series in the Hollywood area will want to consider a special event tonight at 9:30 p.m. at Los Angeles' Vista Theater: a screening of Parts I and VI, with a Q&A panel hosted by ShockTilYouDrop.com and featuring Manfredini and actors from the franchise!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

    Shit! Sold out already.

Last night at the Prince Charles Cinema, off Leicester Sq. in London, they put on the first four Friday The 13th movies. It was more funny than frightening of course.

The sell-out crowd cheered every grisly death and every cheesy line uttered, and there were at least 100 cheesy lines for every death. Special mention must be made of the third installment, which sadly wasn't presented in its original 3D, but served only to illicit even bigger laughs than the dialogue. Anyone remember the yoyo shot that that went on forever?

The cinema has graciously promised to put on movies five through eight at a later date. If you live in London, make sure you get a ticket, and support a genuine independent cinema.

PS I don't work there, I just go there.
