Essentially Repackaged: Legacy Reissues Double-Disc Compilations Under New Names

April 4, 2012 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

There's something familiar about many of Legacy's new entries in their ongoing The Essential series hitting stores in April and May.

Of the four double-disc compilations - one for prog-rock masters Blue Öyster Cult, one apiece for country stars Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn and one for pop chanteuse Mariah Carey - three have already been reissued under different names. The country ones are repackages of each performer's latest hits set (Jackson's 2010 contract-closing 34 Number One Hits and Brooks & Dunn's 2009 #1s...and Then Some, released ahead of the duo's farewell tour), while Mariah's set came out in 2001 as Greatest Hits, once the singer left Columbia for a brief, disastrous run with Virgin. (That set has already been reissued as The Essential Mariah Carey in Europe as of last year.)

And while the new set, The Essential Blue Öyster Cult, provides new fans with a healthy look at their lengthy career beyond just the cowbell-heavy antics of "(Don't Fear) the Reaper" (not to mention expanding heavily upon the 2003 single-disc set of the same name), none of the material here is new. The compilation slightly resembles a less-rarity-packed version of 1995's Workshop of the Telescopes (one track of which, the cover of "Born to Be Wild," appears here).

All of these sets are out April 17 except the Mariah Carey set, available May 8. Hit the jump for full details on all of them.

Mike Duquette

Michael Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he discovered there was more than one version of John Williams' soundtrack to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, with bylines on catalog at Discogs, City Pages and Ultimate Prince and credits on titles including the Grammy-winning 'Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of "Weird Al" Yankovic.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with an ever-expanding collection of music.

More of the same re-hash. Just like Universal. Their catalog departments need to be a bit more creative with compilations and reissues. As with the Gold series and now the Icon line from UMG, we see the same stuff over and over and over. I'd rather see them dig deeper into their vaults and give us remastered album reissues with bonus tracks. If the days of the CD are indeed numbered, please allow us the final opportunity to get some of these out of print deep catalog titles, even if they are limited editions.

Shameful laziness on the part of these major labels. To think they have unreleased goodies in the vaults that the fans would clamor for (if given the chance) and all they can do is rehash previously released material, smacking the product with new images and hoping folks won't notice. It's beyond shameful actually, and immeasurably embarrassing. Music fans must boycott these piss poor cash-in efforts and demand superior future releases.
