Raise The Dead! "May 1977" Box Set Announced

May 6, 2013 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

May 1977What a long, strange trip it was for The Grateful Dead in the spring of 1977. The band had taken an unheard-of 20-month hiatus to focus on solo works, but would come back later that year with a new contract (signed to Arista Records by Clive Davis) and an exciting new album, the complex, prog-influenced Terrapin Station. Their 26-date tour in the spring of 1977 is not only notable for its musicality - the band were tightening up their sound and revving up anticipation for the new material on Terrapin - but also for its place in Deadhead tape trading history; the band's now-legendary May 8 show at Cornell University was one of the first highest-quality soundboard recordings to enjoy a wide berth among traders, making it a crucial waypoint for developing fans.

Now, more than 35 years later, the latest Dead box set is a 14-disc compilation releasing five complete shows from that tour in full for the first time anywhere. The aptly-named May 1977 features the Dead's sets from St. Paul, Minnesota's Civic Center Arena on May 11, two shows from Chicago's Auditorium Theatre on May 12 and 13, a May 15 engagement at the St. Louis Arena in Missouri and a show at the University of Tuscaloosa, Alabama on May 17. Newly remastered in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering, this deluxe package will feature a custom die-cut box and copious photos and liner notes, including individual notes for each show and an essay by Dead historian Steve Silberman.

Like previous live boxes exhaustively chronicling Dead tours, May 1977 will be limited to 15,000 copies available through the band's website. They will be available on or about June 11, after which lossless digital downloads of the sets will be available.

Rolling Stone has some exclusive audio for your enjoyment, and the full track lists and pre-order links are after the jump.

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Interesting that they're skipping, by only a few days, the classic run of shows in Buffalo, Utica, and Boston from 5/7 -5/9/77. Legend has it the classic 5/8 show, of which an audience tape now resides in the Library of Congress, isn't actually in the Dead's vault. So that's why, I guess.

Anyway, it's another outrageously priced boxed set that's being made in limited edition so once they're gone they're gone and fans who want to save up for one, or fans who come along later, will be out of luck. Just like with the new "Dave's Picks" series. Every entry sells out in a matter of days now, so they clearly aren't meeting demand.

Of course, just wait long enough and there will be other ways to obtain the music. Minus the fancy packaging, but that's OK.

Wait... Sorry, I missed the part about the lossless downloads. OK, that is FINALLY a step in the right direction by Rhino.

Those of us who just want the music, and often get shut out by the high prices/limited editions, now have reason to rejoice.

And Rhino/the Dead can actually sell more music and not encourage people to get the music via illicit means.

14 CDs ina lavish box with a nice booklet, for $10 a disc isn't exactly "outrageously priced" IMO.
