Simply the Best: Romantic New Tina Turner Compilation Announced
Tina Turner knows plenty about love and loss, both on and offstage. The legendary performer shook up the ’60s with her husband Ike and their relentlessly soulful revue, culminating with the Phil Spector-produced “River Deep – Mountain High” and an opening slot for The Rolling Stones on tour. But Ike’s substance (and marital) abuse led Tina to divorce him in 1976 and struggled to make a name for herself as a solo artist. Of course, less than a decade later, 1984’s iconic Private Dancer put her firmly at the top of the heap, selling more than 5 million copies in the U.S. and winning four Grammy Awards.
Turner’s last studio album was released in 1999, but she’s still going strong, as a 50th anniversary tour in 2008-2009 attested to. And now, the newly-rejuvenated Parlophone will release a new compilation highlighting Turner’s romantic side in time for Valentine’s Day.
Love Songs features 18 classics from Turner’s Capitol/Parlophone discography, hitting all of her major studio albums (Private Dancer, Break Every Rule (1986), Foreign Affair (1989), Wildest Dreams (1995) and Twenty Four Seven (1999)), plus the 1991 compilation Simply The Best and the soundtrack to 1993’s acclaimed biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It, which featured re-recordings of Tina’s early classics and new hits including the pop smash “I Don’t Wanna Fight.” A few lesser known singles, including covers of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and John Waite’s “Missing You,” feature on the 18-track disc, which closes full-circle with Ike & Tina’s original transmission from the Wall of Sound, “River Deep – Mountain High.”

Interesting … is there any unreleased/rare stuff they could be putting out instead of the same stuff all the time?
I agree Dustin. Whatever happened to Tina continuing to record even though she technically retired from touring? I remember distinctly that she was still going to be putting out new albums, just not touring. Other than a few new tracks on compilations, there has not been one new album from her since Twenty-Four Seven. This collection does not interest me in the least. Is the label going to do anything special for the 30th anniversary this year of her monster album Private Dancer? Perhaps bonus non-lp tracks and packaged in mini lp cover replicating the US album art. They should do something.
That would be nice!!! They don’t even list her as an artist on their website: http://www.parlophone.co.uk/artists/ (under Current or Legacy) so I don’t know what is going on.
This compilation looks great…and her fifty five year old legs from almost two decades ago. With that all said she has recorded in recent years. One or two studio l.p. releases were of Buddhist music. There was some pop music worked on and recorded half a decade ago but since the dawn of this new century the general public have decided to steal copyrighted music so now it is gone and the recording artists of legend. Too bad so sad! You all should have had standards and values but since you did not it is too late!
The last thing the world needs is another Tina Turner comp, especially with the omnipresent artwork from the Wildest Dreams era. What a waste of time.
