Edsel earned some deservedly high marks for last year's red carpet treatment of Belinda Carlisle's solo catalogue, remastering and expanding her albums for Virgin (in the U.K.)/MCA (in the U.S.) and issuing a career-spanning compilation as well. Now, they've announced expansions of three more albums Go-Go's frontwoman.
The U.K. catalogue label will release a CD/DVD edition of solo debut Belinda (1986), which featured the Top 5 hit "Mad About You" and a cover of Freda Payne's "Band of Gold" (remixes of which featured Payne herself); a 2CD/DVD version of 1996's A Woman and a Man, which featured U.K. Top 10 hits "In Too Deep" and "Always Breaking My Heart," and an expanded CD of her most recent studio effort, 2007's Voila, which featured spirited covers of French-language pop standards.
Belinda comes with remixes of "Mad About You" and "Band of Gold" plus "Dancing in the City," from the soundtrack to the film Burglar, as well as the original Belinda live concert video. A Man and a Woman features 19 bonus tracks and four music videos, while Voila features, on one disc, the original album and a four-track bonus EP of English language versions.
All four releases are due September 1; after the jump you'll find complete track listings and Amazon U.K. order links!

SADLY, "VOILA" OFFERS NOTHING NEW. IT'S THE ONE THAT I WON'T BUY, THOUGH I LOVE IT, BUT I HAVE IT ALL ON THE 2007 EDITION. EDSEL, I DON'T UNDERSTAND: IF NOT NEW SONGS, A LIVE, A REMIX OR SOMETHING???????
djmichaelangelo says
Still no "In My Wildest Dreams" huh? I was so SO hoping for that song from the Mannequin sdtk to be unearthed from the vaults, but apparently no one can even FIND the master recording of the full studio version (without all the movie sound effects from the beginning credits). I'll probably buy at least one of these 3 reissues though, since I'm a huge HUGE fan of Belinda, and I bought all 4 of the ones they released before in a heartbeat! The "Belinda" reissue is quite disappointing though, why couldn't they have included some instrumentals, TV tracks, or even acapellas? At least we get the remixes for "Remember September" on digital format, which I'm excited about!
Jimmy says
Interestingly Amazon has just listed a 7CD "Complete Studio Albums Collection" due on 6 October...also via Edsel.
Justin Kantor says
The "Belinda" reissue will also feature the promo videos for "Mad About You" and "I Feel the Magic" on the DVD! I had the opportunity to write the liner notes for this reissue and "A Woman & A Man" (as I did with the first four BC reissues) and have confirmed with my project manager at Edsel.
djmichaelangelo says
@Justin niiiiice!! any chance you can gain some insight into "In My Wildest Dreams" and why it's missing from these reissues? Is it really because no one can find the physical master tapes of the track? Or is it more of a licensing issue?
Jason says
djmichaelangelo, a master for "In My Wildest Dreams" apparently cannot be found anywhere, hence its exclusion again.
Justin Kantor, are you aware of the missing versions from "Belinda"? "I Feel the Magic [7" Mix]" and "Mad About You [12" Instrumental]" are not presented. I've also read that a single edit for "Dancing in the City" is missing as well. I know that the 7" of "I Feel the Magic" is long sought after by fans. Any chance of revising the track selection to include this at the very least?
Carlo says
Hello, Justin! I'm so glad I found your post on this website and seeing that you are part of this project! I'm loving these re-issues! I bought the previous four. Thank you for all the useful info you're giving us. I was very disappointed though regarding Belinda's dvd not having the two promo videos, but now you are saying they ARE included. Also on the facebook page today they mentioned they ARE included. So you think the tracklist info sent to Amazon and the media in general just wasn't the final one? I hope they update it soon so more fans will buy it and pre-order right away now that the two promo videos are indeed part of it. They were part of the recent deluxe version of the greatest hits issued by Belinda so I was assuming there were no copyright problems to include them also on this reissue of the Belinda album. Have a great day!
Justin Kantor says
Hi Carlo,
Thanks for the positive feedback! The Amazon error has something to do with the template that is used being difficult to modify when providing details on tracklistings. However, my project manager said that he was going to see about the error being corrected soon!
R.E. says
I'm looking forward to these, but was hoping for the single version of "I Feel the Magic" and the instrumental version of "Mad About You" (which was on the vinyl 12" single). There was also a second, slower version of "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" from the CD single. Otherwise it looks like a great collection!
Justin Kantor says
Hi Jason,
I wasn't aware that there was a different 7" mix of "I Feel the Magic." I will ask my contact at the label about it. As for the 12" Instrumental of "Mad About You" its omission might be due to timing constraints, but I will mention it as well, just in case.
Michael: Edsel also tried to locate the master for "In My Wildest Dreams" when compiling 'The Anthology.' It's a shame that it's MIA.
djmichaelangelo says
Justin & Jason - you know who might have a copy of "In My Wildest Dreams" or know where to find it? Michael Jay; he's a producer and songwriter from the 80's (Martika, Alisha, etc). He and I used to email years ago, and I remember asking him about this exact song once! I sent him the LQ soundtrack clip (complete with movie-credits sound effects, etc) and he looked into it for me. Now this quote took some serious digging through my old AOL emails, but I managed to find what he said:
Thanks for sending "Wildest Dreams." I don't know if you knew this about me, but I often assist in compiling Greatest Hits packages for a variety of artists. I just completed working on the new Hanson Millennium Collection series in which we included a rare soundtrack song by Hanson that wasn't on any of their albums. My friends who do those Millennium Collection series are always asking me for ideas on who to do next, but they have to be artists who's masters are owned by Universal or Polygram. So I asked them about doing one for Belinda Carlisle in which we could license the "Dreams" track, but they said it would be difficult because a lot of her stuff is actually owned by Virgin through EMI. But, they did like the idea, so they said they'd be looking into it. I'll let you know if anything happens.
All the best,
Michael Jay

this was in May 2006 btw
Jason says
djmichaelangelo, thanks for the response. Perhaps since you were once in contact with Michael Jay it would be best for you to try contacting him again regarding "In My Wildest Dreams". However, based on that e-mail, I'm guessing that nothing ever came about regarding the song. I'm curious if he still works for Universal. Perhaps he may have some insight, especially now that Universal owns EMI.
Jason says
Justin,
Thank you for your response and for asking your contact at the label about it. We appreciate your assistance! I just feel like leaving out "I Feel the Magic [7" Mix]", at the very least, would be a big oversight, especially since it has never been made available on CD, to the best of my knowledge, and these Carlisle reissues seem to be rather complete. Please keep us updated. Thank you.
Justin Kantor says
Hi guys,
I got a reply from my project manager. For some reason, Universal would not license the Extended Instrumental of "Mad About You." In the case of the 7" mix of "I Feel the Magic," the master is MIA -- and Edsel opted not to go with a vinyl transfer. Regarding "In My Wildest Dreams," it comes down to an artistic decision (but let's hope that changes in the future!).
Hope that's helpful. Thanks again for your continued interest.
J.
Jason says
Well, Justin, thank you very much for the information. Mysteries solved. 🙂
Giuseppe says
Many thanks to Justin Kantor for your efforts on this project and to all the fans for your valuable information and passion for these reissues.
Justin: You mention the exclusion of "In My Wildest Dreams" being an artistic decision. Does that mean a master has in fact been located but that Belinda does not want it to be released?
I am saddened to hear of the other omitted tracks and missing masters. Perhaps these can be sorted and included on a future project such as the upcoming complete albums collection set.
Justin Kantor says
Hi Giuseppe,
My pleasure. Glad to know that our efforts are worthwhile! I know that there have been some issues regarding the master for "Wildest Dreams"; but also, Belinda is not too keen on the song. There's still possibility for another Belinda package from Edsel down the line, so I wouldn't rule it out totally. But for now, it seems that it will remain an elusive track!
djmichaelangelo says
Madonna can't stand some of her earlier songs either, so for the ones that are fan favorites she's been known to perform them in concert in a completely re-tooled version. "Like A Virgin" is one song I can think of as an example. Or how Mariah Carey feels about one of her early tunes: "I Don't Wanna Cry" which she doesn't perform in concert because of bad memories associated with the song. But at least she doesn't try to censor its entire existence. She knows there are plenty of fans out there for whom the song is one of their favorites! I hope Belinda can get over her petty dislike of "In My Wildest Dreams" and realize that thousands of her fans have been clamoring for its release for decades now. It's not always about you Ms. Carlisle! Think of your loyal fans who've stood by you for all these years - the ones who have faithfully bought your records, gone to see you in concert, and supported your career, allowing you to live the comfortable lifestyle you do. Can't you throw us a bone pretty please?
Giuseppe says
Hi, Justin:
Thanks for your kind reply. It must be incredibly frustrating for you to put your heart and soul into these specialty products and fight for every tidbit sought by the fans, then having to break the news that certain wish list wishes won't be granted this go 'round. Please know that despite any unfortunate omissions, your efforts are indeed worthwhile and make many Belinda loving folks very happy!
Justin Kantor says
Hi Giuseppe,
In fact, I am quite happy just to be involved in the process! Belinda has been a joy to speak with on both occasions on which I have interviewed her. I understand that it is frustrating for fans to not get certain tracks; however, I also see from the artist's point of view when they have mixed feelings regarding certain recordings. The petition idea is a good one!
Hope all is well.
J.
Giuseppe says
djmichaelangelo: You make a great point! Perhaps if the fans petition Belinda for a release of the song, (perhaps even requesting it at live shows) she will have a change of heart. Yazoo was not keen on the song "Get Set" but eventually allowed it to be remastered and released as a digital bonus track much to the delight of their longtime fans.
Giuseppe says
Great news, Belinda Buddies: A complete version of "In My Wildest Dreams" has surfaced! Not sure of the source (it might be a cassette copy as opposed to a studio master) but if nothing else at least the track exists in some form. I imagine Edsel may want to hold out for proper master tapes to emerge before considering it for a future product, though if the source material can be properly mastered perhaps an exception will be made considering the rarity of and demand for this recording. It will be interesting to see how this evolves...
djmichaelangelo says
@Giuseppe - uhhhh dude, you should NOT be posting about this 😮 if in fact you do have the entire song, your "source" undoubtedly told you how rare and top-secret it is, that it shouldn't be leaked and not to go bragging about it online....DISCRETION!!!!
djmichaelangelo says
update: oops never mind, I just realized it's on YouTube 🙁
Giuseppe says
I didn't leak the song, I just discovered it on YouTube... and what a gem it is. Why would Belinda hate this song?! The lyric is uplifting, the music is infectious and her vocal is gutsy and wide-ranging. She is a survivor who has made peace with various aspects of her past, and she ought to make peace with this great song. If nothing else, she now markets herself in the nostalgia circuit where anything that stirs up warm thoughts of the past among an aging fan base means more money in the bank for the artist. Plenty of her fans would be thrilled if "In My Wildest Dreams" were to be issued in some form, and if - *GASP* - she would throw us a bone and perform it at a gig sometime... even an a cappella snippet. She's embraced lesser recordings than this one...
Dan says
Unless I missed it, it seems the 7"(William Orbit) mix of "Mad About You" has been overlooked. It's a little more rhythmic than the album version. I heard the instrumental on youtube and I did not like the mix of it for whatever reason (occasional guitar blares gave it a rock sound)
justsayjoe says
Hi all!
These reissues are stunning. BUT I already bought the first ones so how do I get Belinda's "BOX"? will the box include ALL the deluxe editions? Will Edsel just send me an empty box?
Love and circles in the sand,
Joe H.
Carlo says
Hello, guys! Does anybody have already the Belinda re-issue that came out yesterday. Even though a few weeks back Justin confirmed that the Belinda re-issue WILL have the videos for Mad About You and I Feel The Magic and it was even mentioned on facebook, no correction was ever made on Amazon or any press release. I'm curious to know if it happened in the end or not. Thank you!
Rob says
So it turns out that there are errors on the A Woman And A Man reissue. The single versions of In Too Deep and Always Breaking My Heart are missing and not listed in the tracklisting (yet the back cover blurb states they are included in the "nineteen bonus track" (without the single mixes there are only seventeen bonus tracks) and the version of I Won't Say (I'm In Love) is not even Belinda!
aquaplex says
Oh dear. Seems there has been a screw up with the A Woman And A Man reissue. The single edits of In Too Deep and Always Breaking My Heart are missing (though not on the printed tracklistings, the blurb on the back cover states they form part of the "nineteen bonus tracks" though without the single versions there are only seventeen). Also the version of I Won't Say (I'm In Love) isn't even Belinda but the Disney cast version!
Jason says
Wow. What a screw up! It's amazing how big mistakes like the above mentioned get overlooked. I'm glad that I haven't bought my copy yet. I'll wait for Edsel to fix this.
Carlo says
Hi, Justin! The last time I was checking on this it was back in September and there were several problems with the release of the second wave of re-issues. It was documented on facebook on Belinda's page and I believe she even posted and apology. I decided to hold from buying those re-issues of the second wave. Was the problem solved in the end? A couple of days ago I saw the CDs on Amazon, but I'm afraid of buying if the problems were never fixed. I don't recall them all, but I believe was even a track that wasn't Belinda singing, right? I would really appreciate any update. I really want to finish buying all my re-issues now.
Thanks!
