This May, Faith No More, the hard-rocking San Francisco band, will unveil Sol Invictus, its first new album since 1997.   To mark the occasion, Rhino Records is revisiting the pair of albums that solidified the group's place in the rock pantheon: 1989's The Real Thing and 1992's Angel Dust.  On June 9, the label will reissue both albums as two-disc sets, with each containing a second disc of rarities.  In addition to the CD sets, Rhino will issue 2-LP. 180-gram black vinyl editions with the original albums plus selections from the CD bonus discs.  The vinyl editions, however, won't arrive until August.

Though Faith No More made its debut in 1985 on the Bay Area-based Mordam label, the band didn't break through until the release of its third album - and second for Slash Records - Grammy-nominated The Real Thing.  The LP introduced the line-up of Mike Bordin (drums), Roddy Bottum (keyboards), Bill Gould (bass), Jim Martin (guitars), and Mike Patton (vocals).  Metal-rock-funk hybrid The Real Thing became a platinum seller, reaching No. 11 on the LP charts and yielding the singles "From Out Of Nowhere" (a Top 25 U.K. hit) and "Falling to Pieces" (which cracked the Hot 100) as well as the Grammy-nominated MTV favorite "Epic."  The bonus disc on Rhino's upcoming edition includes eleven tracks such as remixed versions of the singles, live performances of "Surprise You're Dead," "Underwater Love" and Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," as well as single flipsides "Cowboy Song" and "The Grade."

Faith No More's next album, Angel Dust, fared even better than its predecessor.  It featured the same band line-up, though it would prove to be Jim Martin's final album with the band.  The LP, which incorporated samples from diverse sources including Simon and Garfunkel's "Cecilia" and classical music, also broadened the Faith No More sound with influences ranging from The Carpenters to John Barry (whose Midnight Cowboy was covered).  It made the U.S. Top 10, and remains Faith No More's best-selling album outside of the United States.  The bonus disc features seventeen tracks including a mix of "Midlife Crisis" by the band's longtime producer Matt Wallace, three live recordings from a concert in Munich, Germany, as well as covers of the Dead Kennedys' "Let's Lynch the Landlord" and Lionel Richie's "Easy."

The reunited Faith No More, featuring Bordin, Bottum, Gould, Patton and Jon Hudson (who joined the band with 1997's Album of the Year) currently has live dates scheduled through September 2015, making this the perfect time to immerse yourself in the band's back catalogue. The band itself has taken the time to address the new reissues, noting on its Facebook page that "Most of you have probably heard news about upcoming Angel Dust and Real Thing reissues, and the latest statements seem imply that these are band sponsored releases. In fact, they are Warners/Rhino re-issues (who still own the license to them). This is not to say that they are not worth getting...it's just that they are not coming from us. Hope that makes sense. Thanks."
