Give My Regards to Broadway: Sony Masterworks Seeks Votes on Vinyl Reissues

July 10, 2015 By Randy Fairman 5 Comments

Cabaret OBCAre you a vinyl enthusiast?  Do you enjoy the music of Broadway?  If so, then you might be interested in the poll being conducted right now by Sony Masterworks' Broadway division.  The label has just announced that it's seeking suggestions for Broadway cast album to reissue on vinyl.  By going to this link at Masterworks' website, you can vote on which titles you would like to see.

The 14 titles on which you currently can vote encompass musicals by some of Broadway's biggest names including Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman and Stephen Schwartz:

  • Gypsy (1959 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Cabaret (1966 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Fiddler on the Roof (1964 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • My Fair Lady (1956 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • West Side Story (1957 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • The Sound of Music (1959 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • South Pacific (1949 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Hello, Dolly! (1964 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Company (1970 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • A Little Night Music (1973 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Oliver! (1963 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Hair (1968 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Godspell (1971 Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • 42nd Street (1980 Original Broadway Cast Recording)

A Little Night Music OBCAll of the selections listed are staples of Broadway.  If you would like to dig a bit deeper into the vaults, you may suggest any title that Sony Masterworks has in its repertoire for the label to reissue on vinyl.  Remember, that includes all cast albums on the Columbia and RCA Victor labels, as well as Arista, Epic and associated labels.  You may also tweet your suggestions to @SonyBroadway.

No information has been announced as to when these titles might be released, but if you vote and give your e-mail address, Sony Masterworks will e-mail the names of the winning titles once polling is closed.  So if you would like to see any of these titles in new (hopefully remastered, 180-gram) vinyl editions, head on over to Sony Masterworks' website and make your voice heard now.  Curtain up!

I would like to see Sony go back to the original session tapes, remaster those from scratch and reissue them as high definition CDs or lossless streaming files. Collectors don't want vinyl. They want the best quality digital.

I sort of agree. Not interested in digital but I would be interested in High Def CD. Why not offer both vinyl and CD reissues, even if only for limited release?

If they want to release something they should remaster & re-release the quad versions of "Company" (Columbia SQ 30993) and "A Little Night Music" (Columbia SQ 32265).

After having purchased the original LPs 35 to 50 years ago, replacing them when issued on CD, this is the last thing I am looking to purchase. Those who want LPs can find them on ebay and the Goodwill store. Please remaster and issue titles that have not been released on CD and have only had LP issues years ago. Or consider expanded editions of classic show CDs. Or issue new titles in CD, digital and LP formats to accommodate the market.

When I looked at the list, my first thought was that I see most of these titles regularly at every Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift store I browse through. Anyone who wanted these on LP has probably already found a decent copy for a dollar or less or could do so with very little effort.
