Get Closer: Two Discs of Linda Ronstadt Collected on "Just One Look"

August 4, 2015 By Joe Marchese 7 Comments

Linda Ronstadt - Just One LookRoughly one year following the release of Starbucks' Opus Collection anthology, Rhino has announced a new compilation celebrating the resplendent voice of Linda Ronstadt.  Just One Look - Classic Linda Ronstadt is due from the label on August 21, featuring 30 newly-remastered tracks on two CDs.

The chronologically-assembled collection begins with Michael Nesmith's timeless "Different Drum" as performed by The Stone Poneys featuring Linda, then jumps forward to the 1973 solo album Don't Cry Now, overlooking Ronstadt's three earliest Capitol solo LPs.  From that point on, Just One Look touches on all of Ronstadt's LPs through 1982's Get Closer.  Concentrating on the versatile vocalist's contemporary pop material, no tracks are culled from her Nelson Riddle and Trio collaborations or her Spanish-language albums; the collection picks up with 1989's smash Aaron Neville pairing Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind and concludes with tracks from 1993's Winter Light.  No material is included from any of Ronstadt's subsequent recordings.

Just One Look includes key hit singles from this period including "You're No Good, "Tracks of My Tears," "Heat Wave," "Blue Bayou," "It's So Easy" and "Just One Look."  However, note that the tracklisting lacks major hits and favorites from the Ronstadt catalogue such as "Long, Long Time," "When Will I Be Loved," "That'll Be the Day," "Back in the U.S.A.," "Ooh, Baby, Baby" and the Grammy-winning American Tail duet "Somewhere Out There."

This new retrospective may serve most to whet the appetite for the upcoming expanded collection of Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris' Trio recordings; the project was confirmed by the artists to Rolling Stone and Country Music Television earlier this year and is awaiting official announcement from the label.  Just One Look - Classic Linda Ronstadt is due in stores just a couple of weeks from now, on August 21.  You can pre-order at the links below!

I wish Capitol would re-issue "A Retrospective" remastered on CD. I know they have the Capitol Years collection, but I would rather have "A Retrospective". Will probably just have to make my own.

Can't wait to hear some of these gems remastered finally. Would have killed to hear Try Me Again and I Keep it Hid included. Her catalog is so vast -the compilations always leave out favorites and regularly disappoint some in Linda's devoted legions. Even her earliest solo recordings , as she found her way vocally, hold fascination because of the musicians, song choices and that voice - as wonderful and pure an instrument as the rock and roll era has given us. While we grow old and gray waiting for rarities and a quality Live release (best female voice in concert -evah) this will have to do. Ahh the Cover looks great.

Joe, thanks for reporting this new Ronstadt compilation. If you learn about plans to release newly remastered versions of any of her albums, let us know.

Music Club UK's 2011 "Collection" is so superior to this...46 tracks on 2 CD's, which also includes ALL the Capitol hits, Spanish language tracks, "What's New" with Nelson Riddle's Orchestra...however, no "Somewhere Out There" and "All My Life" is the Aaron Neville track that appears instead of "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" ("Don't Know Much" is here too)...It's also a budget collection so it really is the best introduction to this Rock and Roll Hall of Famer! Full track listing available at Amazon UK...

This is the first compilation I have seen that features the single "Get Closer." I have been trying to get that song for years. The album "Get Closer" on CD always goes for a fortune on eBay. Half of that album is included on here, plus four songs from "Winter Light" which I also do not own, so this is a definitely for me. I'm hoping there will be nice liner notes with this.

I had no idea that the Get Closer CD is out of print. Remember the good old days before Ebay and the Amazon.com market place when you could buy cut outs at cheap prices in the bargain bins at department stores?

Being able to finally get "I Knew You When" on a CD (as noted by others, the Get Closer CD is out of print and goes for a bundle) makes this a must purchase for me.
