Thank You Friends: Omnivore Offers Big Star, Neil Finn and Paul Kelly For Record Store Day Black Friday

Big Star - Jesus ChristOmnivore Recordings is looking ahead to this year’s annual Black Friday Record Store Day event on Friday, November 27, with the announcement of two special vinyl releases.

The first continues in the tradition of Omnivore’s Big Star releases.  The RSD 10-inch EP of Jesus Christ features the original album version of the song recorded for the band’s Third plus the demo version (which first appeared on the acclaimed Keep an Eye on the Sky box set) and five previously unissued tracks, for a total of seven cuts on the EP.  “Another Time Another Place and You” makes its first ever official appearance, as does the TV Mix of “Thank You Friends” and two untitled instrumental demos by the late Chris Bell; all four of these tracks were originally mixed for inclusion in the documentary film Nothing Can Hurt Me.  This collection is rounded out by a demo of Third‘s “Big Black Car.”

Most excitingly, this title will preview the 2016 release of the box set Complete Third.  The Jesus Christ EP features the Three Wise Men artwork from a 1973 Big Star promo poster.  It’s pressed on translucent blue vinyl, and contains a download card.

Neil Finn and Paul Kelly - Goin' Your Way HighlightsJesus Christ is joined by Goin’ Your Way (Highlights) from Neil Finn and Paul Kelly.  Finn and Kelly joined forces in 2013 for a tour, and their performance at the Sydney Opera House was recorded and released in Australia as Goin’ Your Way.  This souvenir of a memorable evening reached the Top 5 on the charts and earned a Gold certification, but it hasn’t been available outside of Australia and New Zealand…until now!  On December 11, Omnivore will issue Goin’ Your Way on 2 CDs and DD, but before that, highlights will be released for Record Store Day Black Friday.

Goin’ Your Way (Highlights) features 10 tracks from the concert on translucent yellow vinyl.  This tour through both men’s songbooks includes Kelly’s “To Her Door” and “Before Too Long” and Finn’s “She Will Have Her Way” as well as “Won’t Give In” from The Finn Brothers, “Four Seasons In One Day” and “Don’t Dream It’s Over” from Crowded House, plus other favorites from both artists.  The band as heard on Goin’ Your Way includes Kelly’s nephew Dan, on guitar, Finn’s son Elroy, on drums, and Zoe Hauptmann on bass.  This LP does not include a download card.

Both Jesus Christ and Goin’ Your Way (Highlights) will be available at participating Record Store Day retailers on Friday, November 27.  The full Goin’ Your Way on CD and DD arrives on December 11, and you can look for Big Star’s Complete Third in 2016!

  1. Been waiting forever for the Finn/Kelly to get a U.S. release. Joe, do you know if the DVD/Blu-ray of the same title will get a U.S. release as well?

  2. Agreed Rob. The international video releases were supposed to be region free but it turned out to not be the case. Hoping for Omnivore to release the Blu Ray in the US. Got the cd as an import and love it but would REALLY like to have the video.
