Honey Hi: Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" Deluxe Box Set Due In December

October 30, 2015 By Joe Marchese 6 Comments

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk DE

Those aren't just rumo(u)rs!  After one week of premature reporting all around the 'net, Rhino has confirmed the long-awaited news this morning: Fleetwood Mac's 1979 magnum opus Tusk is coming in a 5-CD/1-DVD/2-LP Deluxe Edition, a 3-CD Expanded Edition and a 1-CD remaster on December 4!

Reportedly the most expensive rock album ever made, the sprawling, 20-track double album followed up the record-shattering success of Rumours and confounded observers expecting another collection of radio-friendly pop-rockers.  Instead, the million-dollar album was a radical departure, and a highly unconventional collection offering nine songs by Lindsey Buckingham, six by Christine McVie and five by Stevie Nicks.  Buckingham took unprecedented creative control of Tusk (the credits read: "Produced by Fleetwood Mac (Special Thanks to Lindsey Buckingham) with Richard Dashut and Ken Caillat") and pushed the envelope with its experimental, forward-thinking sounds.

A No. 4 U.S./No. 1 U.K. success, Tusk yielded four U.S. single hits with Nicks' "Sara" (No. 7 Pop) and "Sisters of the Moon" (No. 86), McVie's "Think About Me" (No. 20) and Buckingham's title track (No. 8) with its memorable, unusual arrangement for marching band.  It sold more than four million copies worldwide.  In 2004, Warner Bros. Records and Rhino expanded Tusk into a 2-CD set featuring 21 demos, rough versions and single edits; other than the single versions, every one of these tracks was previously unreleased.

The upcoming Deluxe Edition features five CDs.  Joining the remastered original album is an alternate version of the complete album made up of session outtakes (most of which have never been issued) as well as an additional disc of singles, demos and remixes, including an alternate of "Think About Me," "Out On The Road," and several incarnations of "I Know I'm Not Wrong."  Rounding out the CD portion of the box set are two live discs culled from the band's 1979 Tusk tour with selections from London, Tucson, and St. Louis concerts.  These discs include live versions of album tracks such as "Sara, "Over And Over" and "Save Me a Place," as well as Mac perennial favorites like "Landslide," "You Make Loving Fun," "Rhiannon," "Don't Stop" and "Go Your Own Way."

The Deluxe Edition also features, on DVD-Audio, a never-before-released 5.1 surround mix of Tusk as well as a 2-LP vinyl of the original album. The collection is housed in a box reminiscent of the Rumours Deluxe Edition.  It also contains a booklet featuring extended liner notes based on new interviews with all the band members.

If the Deluxe Edition is too much Tusk for your taste, Rhino will also offer an Expanded Edition.  This 3-CD set contains the three studio discs from the Deluxe Edition, eliminating the two live CDs.  This version, too, will be available on December 4 alongside a single-CD remaster.

All three editions of Tusk will be released by Warner Bros. Records/Rhino on December 4 and can be pre-ordered at the links below!

The Rumors super deluxe set gave us the "Rosebud Film" containing live footage from the 1977 tour. So why is the Tusk documentary missing from this set?

Pretty underwhelming. I love this album, but already have the original vinyl, original CD, and the previous deluxe edition. I don't do surround. So my only interest is in the "singles, out-takes and sessions", "alternate Tusk" and live CDs. But I have to buy a box with vinyl and DVD that I will never play to get them. I'm tired of the companies releasing these boxes with different media just to inflate the price.

This is WAY too expensive for my wallet.

Not so expensive if you order at Amazon.co.uk.

By the way, the 5.1 Surround mix was created more than a decade ago, but has been gathering dust on Warner Music shelves, following the company's near abandonment of the DVD-Audio format. They'll still release a DVD-Audio, but only if a superstar "Classic rock" group or artist absolutely insists.

This is too deluxe for me. All I want are the 5 CDs in as small a package as possible.

While I think it is nice that FM have chosen to add some tracks to Tusk, quite honestly, they already made an expanded and remastered package of this, Rumours, and the s/t release a few years ago. I can't find the interview, but a few years ago Mick Fleetwood was quotes as saying we would see remastered and expanded editions of Mirage and Tango in the Night before year's end. With this release I feel like they are on the same schedule as Neil Young's Archives 2. Those two albums need a remaster much more than Tusk.
