Release Round-Up: Week of November 20

November 20, 2015 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

Welcome to this week's Release Round-Up which continues this autumn's tradition of having each week packed with box sets from heavy hitters - in this case, The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, The Who, Queen, Grateful Dead, Frank Sinatra, and they're still not all!  Plus: CD and vinyl reissues, anthologies, and much more!

Beach Boys Party - Uncovered and Unplugged

The Beach Boys, Beach Boys' Party: Uncovered and Unplugged (Capitol) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K.)

The first disc of this 2-CD, 81-track set features the original 1965 Beach Boys Party! album as remixed in original, pre-overdubbed form and then chronologically begins an account of all five sessions as the band runs through the album's familiar tracks as well as ones that didn't make the cut including The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," Leiber and Stoller's "Ruby Baby" and "Riot in Cell Block No. 9," The Beatles' "Ticket to Ride" and more. Dialogue from the sessions has also been included.  This 2-CD and digital album also includes photos from the sessions, essays by Beach Boys historians Alan Boyd and Craig Slowinski, and notes by producer Mark Linett. A vinyl LP edition of the Party album's original 12 tracks in their remixed, stripped-down form, will follow on December 11.  You can get full details here!

Disc 2 features the complete sessions from December 9-10, 1964, four takes of which were released on an expanded edition in 2002. (The sessions from the 10th consist of a second attempt at album opener "Acknowledgement," with saxophonist Archie Shepp and bassist Art Davis joining the quartet. Two of the previously released tracks are making their debut in stereo.) The third disc features the quartet's previously-issued performance of A Love Supreme at the Festival Mondial du Jazz in Antibes in July of 1965-the only time the album was played live in full.  A 2-CD version drops the concert disc.

Regarding Herb Alpert reissues. Could someone PLEASE reach out to the label and suggest remastered releases of the great Herb Alpert and the TJB TV specials on DVD complete with original commercials and other extras? A couple of these specials are on Youtube in very poor prints.

Although Robert Quine recorded some of the Matrix performances with the permission of the band, this release is from the archive of Matrix co-owner Peter Abram. The sound quality of the new release is superior to the Quine recordings.
