This Friday marks what would have been Elvis Presley's 81st birthday. To coincide with this date, RCA/Legacy Recordings has just announced the first major box set of 2016: a 60-disc collection entitled Elvis Presley: The Album Collection due to be released on March 18, 2016.
Presley, of course, needs no introduction. He is among a short list of performers who could be among the most influential performers of the 20th century and beyond. This new set follows similar sets Legacy has released devoted to the catalogues of Miles Davis, Tony Bennett, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. It commemorates the 60th anniversary of the release of Presley's self-titled debut LP for RCA Records on March 23, 1956.
The 60 discs of the set are made up of 57 albums released during Presley's lifetime (many with bonus tracks added) and 3 bonus discs of rarities, one disc each for the '50s, '60s and '70s. The albums include studio albums, movie soundtracks, live albums and compilations. (Several compilations released at the time were collections of singles not included on Presley's albums.) It appears to have all of the relevant albums with the exception of several 1970s compilation albums which contained little unique material. Also missing is Having Fun With Elvis on Stage, but that is not surprising for several reasons: it is only a spoken-word album, RCA did not originally release the album itself, and Presley himself asked that it be withdrawn from his catalogue.
The artwork for each album in the set is promised to be restored and, where applicable, will include original album elements like gatefolds, die-cut sleeves, inserts and even stickers. The artwork for each CD label will replicate the label of the first side of each LP. The set will also include a 300-page hardcover book with notes, discographical information and recording session information.
Presley has had his catalogue mined perhaps more than any other artist. This began very shortly after his death in 1977. RCA and Legacy have released countless reissues and compilations over the years, many of them containing material from the vaults. Box sets of his complete masters have been released. Over the past several years, Legacy has released several 2-disc Legacy Editions of his later albums. And perhaps, most notably, Follow That Dream has been releasing Presley's albums with bonus session material for many years now. All of that extra material would undoubtedly not fit here, even with 60 discs. Therefore, it is hard to guess what exactly will make up the bonus material for the set. But, as Presley's catalogue has become rather daunting over the decades, this appears to be nice one-stop shopping for fans with the material presented as it was originally released.
You'll find the track listing below! If you'd like to celebrate this Presley anniversary with RCA and Legacy, we've got the pre-order links below!

This is incredible. I have the Legacy collection they did for Bob Dylan and it was done very well. Amazon right now has it for $350 which is very expensive but then its about $5.60 per disc which is very good. The Complete Masters Collection for Elvis's 75th Birthday was much more money and went through two limited runs (and is over $1k on e-Bay too). This may not have every master (or it may, we don't know yet), but it still tells most of the story, the rock and roll, Christmas, gospel, movies. One giant question, will the Sun recordings be on the 50's Rarities disc?
Jason Michael says
I have been figuring this box was coming ever since the Complete Masters Collection was announced, and as this is the format I prefer, having the music in the context it was originally released, I have waited patiently. I imagine they will use Vic Anesini's mastering that has been the standard for the last five or so year, and that, along with the authentic reproductions of the original LPs, will make me very happy when this is released. Here are the track listings for the rarities discs:

Joe says
Thanks Jason for the rarities track list! This answered my questions on a few of the tracks I was wondering about. This is going to be a great box set.
Scott says
It looks like all the Sun recordings are present, just not lumped together.
Some of the Sun recordings appeared on "Elvis Presley" (5 tracks), "For LP Fans Only" (4 tracks), "A Date With Elvis" (5 tracks) and "Elvis for Everyone" (1 track). So, that's 15 of 24 Sun tracks on the main albums.
A quick glance at the track listing I found on another site, Sun bonus tracks are included on "For LP Fans Only" (1 track), "A Date With Elvis" (1 track) and then 7 on the Rarities disc. So, that would be the remaining 9.
Joe says
That is great to hear about the Sun tracks as they are essential to rock and roll history. I never owned the individual albums, just box set compilations such as the Complete 50's Masters. So, I did not realize that RCA released several Sun tracks across their LP's after Elvis signed with them. Thanks Scott! This makes this collection even better!
Jeffr Seckler says
Since no one knows what tracks are on the 3 rarities cds , I'm wondering if they contain the singles & b-sides from those decades that were non-lp.?
Jeremy Shatan says
Scroll up - Jason has all the answers.
Scott says
A lot of the non-LP singles and b-sides are appended to certain albums in this set as bonus tracks. Others ("Separate Ways," "Suspicious Minds," "Don't Cry Daddy," "Burning Love," etc.) which were new tracks on albums that were otherwise compilations, are also added as bonus tracks throughout. (You'll notice albums like "Welcome To My World," "Separate Ways," and "Burning Love and Hits from his Movies, Vol. 2" aren't included in this set since they were one or 80-90% previously released material.) I haven't figured out the exact rhyme and reason of how these bonus tracks are placed but it looks to be roughly chronological. I'm sure it will be more clear in the book.
Jeremy Shatan says

Read the article again, its omission was deliberate:
Chuck Clough says
It's great that one of the most important parts of music history is being released by Sony in this format. As a big Dolly Parton fan, I'm still hoping for a collection like this. A box that would at least include her 32 solo
studio releases from 1967's "Hello, I'm Dolly" through 1995's "Something Special" would be incredible, now that Sony has the rights to all the Monument, RCA and Columbia titles,
Ken says
Why on earth would you buy this? From 1961 80% of the material Presley recorded was awful so all you are purchasing is an artefact at an overpriced cost of £220. Still "build it and they will come" syndrome has been the basis of Presley's legacy for 30 years!
Murray Passarieu says
I'm not buying this set as I think it's overkill but you're statement of 80% of his post-1961 material being awful is just an opinion. A lot of people think even the soundtracks has some great music and obviously his late 60s Memphis recordings are legendary to many folks. His 70s stuff was hit and miss in my opinion but contained a lot of great music. Plus, some people just love Elvis and will love having this for that reason.
Rob Maurer says
I've got the Complete Elvis Presley Masters box, various Legacy Editions and FTDs. I'm done.
Brian says
I'd probably buy this if it had mono/stereo twofers, but...

How many will be made?

That's what I want to know. It's a limited edition but can't find anywhere that says how many or if the set will be numbered

The complete Bob Dylan (about 50CDs) went for about $150, and that was a deluxe price. This is a rip-off. Now, if they included EVERY studio session included in the FTD series, I could consider it. But they may be saving that for later, just to sell it all over again.

According to the Elvis information network
Elvis Presley: The Album Collection" 60CD Box Set, More Details:
Good news is that the these are all NEW Re-Masters from the original tapes, re-done by Vic Anesini using the most up-to-date technology.
They were supposedly 2015/16 remastered again by Vic Anesini in the past year as he wanted to improve on what he did in 2005-06 for the 30 CD overpriced box set from Sony.

Regardless of what some of the Elvis websites are reporting, there still has been no official confirmation from SONY that the songs on this new set have been remastered again.
