Review: Elvis Presley, “Sunset Boulevard”

It was late March 1972 when Elvis Presley first entered RCA’s Studio C at 6363 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood – The King’s first time recording at the Hollywood venue.  Most of RCA’s marquee artists, from Jefferson Airplane to Henry Mancini, had already made their mark there, as the studio had opened in 1964.  Presley had previously rehearsed for his Las Vegas engagements in the 32 x 22′ space (the smallest of the building’s three studios) and now, the March 27-30 sessions would be his first proper recording sessions to feature his road…

Pieces of My Life: Elvis’ L.A. Recordings Anthologized in New Box Set

Last year’s Elvis Presley box set was Memphis, devoted to the King’s lengthy history with recording studios in the Tennessee city that became his home. Ahead of another annual Elvis Week at his Graceland estate, the next box set will trace his connections to a recording studio on the West Coast. Sunset Boulevard, available August 1, is a 5CD set featuring Presley’s work at RCA Records’ Studio C in Hollywood – one of the more important studios he’d record in through his final recording years in the 1970s. Promised Land: ‘Memphis’ Box Set Celebrates Elvis’ Connection to a Legendary Rock City

On July 18, 1953, an 18-year-old truck driver from Tupelo, Mississippi named Elvis Presley walked into the Memphis Recording Service at Sun Records. He paid $3.98 to record a double-sided acetate, allegedly a belated birthday gift for his mother. Thus began not only an incredible singing career that changed the edifices of popular music, but a relationship with Tennessee’s second most-populous city – one that would last the rest of his life. This summer, a new box set from Legacy Recordings will chronicle that historic relationship, more than 70 years after it…

Review: Elvis Presley, “Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite: 50th Anniversary Edition”

When Elvis Presley said Aloha from Hawaii 50 years ago, the whole world was watching – or close to it.  The King, fashionably late, stepped onstage at Honolulu’s International Center (capacity at the time: roughly 6,000) at 1:00 a.m. on January 14, 1973 for a scheduled 12:30 a.m. concert.  Satellites were beaming the program to a reported audience of over one billion.  Another fanciful claim by Colonel Parker?  Perhaps.  But Aloha was a technological achievement.  It was the most expensive entertainment broadcast to that point in history and suitably lavish, with Elvis…

Elvis’ ‘Aloha’ Beams Into Box Set for 50th Anniversary

America said Aloha to Elvis Presley in between a trip to the Dark Side of the Moon and a visit to the Houses of the Holy when the once and future King’s Aloha from Hawaii album earned a berth between Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin atop the Billboard chart.  Presley’s Honolulu concert of January 14, 1973, preserved on records by RCA, was monumental in every respect.  The most expensive entertainment broadcast to that point in time, Aloha from Hawaii was viewed by an estimated audience of over one billion people.  The RCA soundtrack has long been one of Presley’s most beloved…

Review: Elvis Presley, “Elvis on Tour”

When Elvis on Tour hit the big screen in 1972, Elvis Presley was no longer the frequent cinema fixture of the 1960s, when he would crank out two or even three motion pictures a year.  His last movie appearance was the 1970 documentary Elvis: That’s the Way It Is, chronicling the Elvis Summer Festival of 1970 at Las Vegas’ International Hotel.  Elvis on Tour painted with an even larger canvas.  Though it had originally been mooted as a new showcase of Presley’s Vegas performances, the concept soon expanded to cover his 15-city…

Burning Love: Elvis Presley’s “Elvis On Tour” Gets Super-Sized on New Box Set

The King once again reigned supreme when Baz Luhrmann’s fantastical biopic Elvis hit cinemas this summer and cruised to $138 million (and counting) in domestic grosses.  Luhrmann deftly blended Presley’s original vocals with that of star Austin Butler, and in at least in one crucial moment in the film, the actual Elvis took the screen in lieu of the young actor.  Now, RCA Records and Legacy Recordings are celebrating 50 years of an earlier film: Elvis On Tour, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s dynamic 1972 concert film/documentary capturing the artist during his exciting rebirth as a…

Holiday Gift Guide Review: Elvis Presley, “Back in Nashville”

When Elvis Presley entered RCA’s famed Nashville Studio B in June 1970, expectations were high.  His last major recording sessions – not counting those for the Universal film Change of Habit – had taken place at Memphis’ American Sound Studio with producer Chips Moman, resulting in the acclaimed From Elvis in Memphis LP.  Could he follow up that career triumph?  Many would argue that he did.  Rather than strictly repeat the formula, he and producer Felton Jarvis crafted the concept album Elvis Country and its almost-as-successful follow-up album of leftovers, Love Letters…

These sessions delivered several albums’ worth of material and are now presented chronologically in a new box set, complete with exciting new mixes on From Elvis In Nashville .
