  1. Yup! This morning I did a quick track for track comparison to the 1996 box set to make sure we’re getting all the outtakes, original speeds, monos, alternates, and the all-important Stack-O-Vocals!

Can’t wait for the upgraded sound (and to hear the unreleased “Good Vibrations” take). If the mastering is anything like the 2015 remasterings of the 2012 Beach Boys mixes Beach Boys albums released via HD… we are in for a heckuva treat!

    1. The upcoming set has all of the tracks from the 1996 box plus the new live and hi-res discs (and a couple of new additions, the “I Know There’s an Answer” vocal session and “Good Vibrations” master with partial vocals). In other words, it’s an upgrade from the ’96 set, both sound- and content-wise.

  2. The strategy of including live versions from random years of tracks from a specific album, as Paul McCartney has done on some of his archival releases, is really annoying for this reader. They don’t work as a playable sequence (repeated songs), and out of the context of the concerts from which they were drawn, they don’t have any archival function. They fail simply by not really having anything to do with the album *sessions* being highlighted. By the logic being employed here, one could throw together any number of concert performances of a given song as a concept… this has been done, an example being Paul Butterfield’s “East West Live” release assembled by Mark Nataflin featuring three *very different* live versions of the same song, but I don’t see this as a satisfactory way to hear the Beach Boys’ live recordings. Most of the Beach Boy’s live releases have been a mess, in fact, with fadeouts, weird sequencing, and the overuse of hits instead of the rarely-played songs that make shows more interesting.

  3. The 10/22/66 concert was at Hill Auditorium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (homecoming), not at Michigan State University. The opening set by the Standells was also recorded and released in recent years by Sundazed, whose CD of it gets the venue right. Honest. I was there.

  4. Michael Edwards

Am I correct in saying that it was determined a few years back that that alternate God Only Knows is NOT Brian singing but is, in fact, Carl?

Also, thanks everyone who sorted that the 96 box is duplicated here. You saved me some time. 🙂

  5. Oh my, if only for the blu-ray, this is quite tasty. While I concur that a complete live concert would have been preferable to just a few extracts, I frankly have not been this excited about a box set in quite a while. One of the greatest musical works ever mastered for blu-ray! Take my money!

  6. It should be noted that only 3 songs from “Pet Sounds” (“Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “God Only Knows” & “Sloop John B.”) were played live in the 1960’s.

Also, many people are wondering if the 5.1 surround mix in this forthcoming set is the same (widely criticized) mix that was included on the “Pet Sounds” DVD-audio disc & the CD + DVD “40th Anniversary” edition. That surround mix is, in fact, 4.0, with the subwoofer & center channel totally silent throughout. Capitol has not made it clear whether the new boxed set has a new, ACTUAL 5.1 surround mix…or not.
The hope for an all-new surround mix is the reason why consumers wanted Capitol’s (cancelled) 2014 Blu-Ray audio disc.

    1. Make that near total overlap, except, that obviously the stereo “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” will have Mike Love singing the middle section(extracted and “flown in” from the original mono mix) instead of having Brian Wilson singing the middle section as on “The Pet Sounds Sessions”. It’s Wilson’s vocal that is now on the multitrack.

      1. Looks like the 1996 version is still easily available – I never got it when it originally was out. I’m probably better off with that one anyway; apparently I wouldn’t. be missing that much with the re-release.

  7. There are also some bundles on the Universal site that aren’t listed here:
-one features a tote bag and a beach ball
    https://store.udiscovermusic.com/*/Pet-Sounds-50th-Anniversary/Pet-Sounds-50th-Anniversary-Collectors-Edition-Exclusive-Beach-Bundle/54Z40B51000?CID=815435150&CommID=970768130

-others feature your choice of MONO or STEREO vinyl, plus a slipmat
    https://store.udiscovermusic.com/*/*/Pet-Sounds-Mono-Vinyl-Exclusive-50th-Anniversary-Slip-Mat/54Z50000000

  8. Is there any word about the mastering for this upcoming edition of “Pet Sounds”? And are they using a new 5.1 mix for the Blu-Ray Audio disc (or are they using the one that came out on the 40th Anniversary Edition)?

  9. I bought the mono/stereo 2012 2cd set of Pet Sounds $13.99:
    http://www.amazon.com/Pet-Sounds-Mono-Stereo-Remasters/dp/B008LA7RM0/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1459632525&sr=1-1&keywords=Pet+sounds

    Now there is a 50th (2016) 2CD mono/stereo set $19.98:
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DB0EADI/?tag=thesecdis-20

Just concerning these sets and not the 4cd/1Blu-ray extra’s, what am I gaining buying the 50th anniversary 2 CD set vs the 1CD set 2012 ?

    Disc: 1 of 1 2012 26 song (13 mono/13 stereo:

It’s only about $3 more for the 2 disc 50th 2016 Anniversary, so perhaps it is worth buying again. I also thought it might all be Hi-Res (192Hz-24-bit). But that is only advertised on the one 5.1 Surround Sound: 96kHz/24-bit pure Blu-ray disc 4.

So is that worth the extra near $60 for one hi-res disc?

Just the facts. I know opinion has arguments for how much you like Pet Sounds, etc.

    Thanks, BJEvS

  10. The word has come down from engineer/archivist Mark Linett, that the surround mix of “Pet Sounds”(to be included in the new box) will be the same mix that was released many years ago on DVD-Audio. What a letdown! That mix is essentially 4.0 (the center channel & subwoofer are not used).
This boxed set is shaping up to not be a very good value.
