This is My Happy Hour: Perth Punks The Scientists Anthologized in New Numero Box

May 19, 2016 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

BUY NOW FROM NUMERO GROUP

Punk rock’s coming up from down under on the newest box set from The Numero Group, dedicated to Australian punk pioneers The Scientists.

Born in Perth in 1978, The Scientists, fronted by teen singer/guitarist Kim Salmon, were Australia’s answer to The Stooges or The Velvet Underground, offering snotty rebellion and jagged, melodic riffs in their music. Moving from Oz to England, the group found several of their releases on Au Go Go Records, including the EP This Heart Doesn’t Run on Blood, This Heart Doesn’t Run on Love and subsequent album You Get What You Deserve! on Karbon Records, making it into the U.K. Indie Chart Top 10.

Salmon would mostly retire The Scientists’ name in 1987, but the band found themselves as influencers of (and subsequently championed by) bands like Sonic Youth and Mudhoney, who invited the band to reform for the U.K.’s All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival.

This summer, Numero celebrates their killer output with A Place Called Bad, a new set chronicling the group and their impact on the local punk scene. Formats include:

  • A 4CD, 80-track box set including the band’s complete studio output, live recordings (including a new-to-CD live set from 1983), plus rare and unreleased photos, discographical info and a “fold out Perth Punk family tree”
  • A 2LP, 23-track set featuring the best of those recordings and similar packaging
  • Versions available exclusively at Numero’s site include a 7″ EP or cassette collection of unreleased studio recordings by Salmon’s first punk band, The Cheap Nasties, in 1977. (That band would, without Salmon, reform in the ’80s as The Manikins.)

A Place Called Bad is available August 19. We will update with Amazon links once they become available.  Full track details for the set are below:

Mike Duquette

Michael Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he discovered there was more than one version of John Williams' soundtrack to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, with bylines on catalog at Discogs, City Pages and Ultimate Prince and credits on titles including the Grammy-winning 'Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of "Weird Al" Yankovic.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with an ever-expanding collection of music.

Convincing noise and that guitar is SO Eddie Cochran-ish!

‘Frantic romantic’ is an absolutely brilliant pop song! Their version of ‘You only live twice’ is fantastic too

I very much hope more Aussie bands are revisited like this

Ps Au Go Go was way ahead of its time as an indie label and record store in Melbourne – I remember buying from their mail order catalogue in the ’80s! great shame that they didn’t last

Saw The Scientists support The Gun Club in Camden in late 1984, and they were fantastic !

John Peel was a huge supporter of the group, and tracks like “‘Set It On Fire” and “Nitro”
were brilliant slabs of garage rock.

“You Get What You Deserve” was out of place in the New Age of Yuppies circa 1985, but
so were The Stooges, Velvets, MC5, NY Dolls in their time. It was another lost gem which
awaits discovery…. A timely reminder of a very fine band.
