Glittering Prize: Simple Minds' "New Gold Dream" to Receive Massive Box Set

Scottish rockers Simple Minds will celebrate their smash album New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) with a sprawling deluxe edition this summer.

Released in the fall of 1982, New Gold Dream, Simple Minds' fifth studio effort, took the band to their highest summit yet as a rock ensemble. "Promised You a Miracle," "Glittering Prize" and "Someone Somewhere in Summertime" were their first three U.K. Top 40 hits, while the album peaked at No. 3. "Promised You a Miracle" got the group their debut appearance on Top of the Pops in England, and the album (featuring a striking sleeve by Malcolm Garrett) stunned critics nationwide and opened up the door for greater success around the world and on stage.

This edition of New Gold Dream is bursting with extras in the grand tradition of Universal U.K.'s fantastic, compact-yet-dense box sets over the years (Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Tears for Fears' The Hurting and Songs from the Big Chair). Inside, fans will find:

-       The newly remastered album, mastered at Abbey Road Studios and approved by founding guitarist Charlie Burchill

-       A disc of 12 remixes from various international markets, including three previously unreleased on CD

-       A disc of the original single A- and B-sides, including the new-to-CD short B-side version of "Glittering Prize (Theme)"

-       BBC sessions recorded in 1982, including a previously unreleased set for John Peel

-       A previously unreleased disc of alternate and rough mixes

-       A DVD including promo videos, previously unavailable Top of the Pops appearances and the rare 5.1 surround mix of the album by Burchill and engineer Ronald Prent, released in 2005 and back in print after a decade

-       A 36-page booklet featuring rare photos and notes by journalist Billy Sloan, drawing from new interviews with Burchill and lead singer Jim Kerr

This new New Gold Dream is available worldwide on July 29. Track lists and links are below!

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Now this is what a deluxe box set should be. And no vinyl. Yay!

I can't complety agree with Mark, because I'm missing live stuff. Such a set should contain a lot of concert recordings, just especially from this period, which has been the band's best one.
