Bad Boy for Life: New Five-Disc Box Celebrates East Coast Hip-Hop Label

In the late ’90s and early ’00s, East Coast rap was dominated by one label: Bad Boy Entertainment. Now, their first 20 years will be celebrated in a five-disc box set later this summer.

First reported by Billboard, Bad Boy Presents The 20th Anniversary Box Set features 80 curated tracks spanning from the label’s first release, Craig Mack’s “Flava in Ya Ear,” up to 2014. Longtime Bad Boy associate and current president Harve Pierre produced the set, and journalist Michael A. Gonzalez provides notes within the 64-page booklet.

The Bad Boy legacy begins with Sean Combs, a onetime A&R man for Uptown Records with an ear for talent and an eye for the lavish. While Combs (known alternately as Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy and Diddy) was the central figure of the Bad Boy family–heard on his act’s intros, seen in their expensive videos and the unmistakable architect of a very distinct, sample-heavy, pop-friendly production style–he gave his artists considerable room to shine.

And there was no greater star than Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G, a Brooklyn-born rapper who at 22 released Ready to Die in 1994, one of the genre’s most defining albums. Biggie, along with his wife, singer Faith Evans, Puffy, Ma$e, female trio Total and R&B acts Carl Thomas and 112, were the building blocks of The Bad Boy Family, which tragically came together to mourn Wallace in 1997, a victim of a senseless East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry turned violent.

Without a rapper as talented as Biggie to fill the void, Bad Boy’s influence cooled, but still supplied fresh R&B and pop-rap hits well into the 2000s, like Danity Kane’s “Damaged,” French Montana’s “Pop That” and tracks by Machine Gun Kelly, southern duo 8Ball & MJG and even Da Band, created on the reality series Making the Band.

Bad Boy has since been revived with a new distribution deal through Epic Records, and Combs’ summer Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour has proven to be one of the genre’s top tickets. Safe to say, then, that Combs and crew can’t stop, won’t stop.

The box set is out August 12. Pre-order links and track list are after the jump!

Mike Duquette

Michael Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he discovered there was more than one version of John Williams' soundtrack to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, with bylines on catalog at Discogs, City Pages and Ultimate Prince and credits on titles including the Grammy-winning 'Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of "Weird Al" Yankovic.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with an ever-expanding collection of music.
