Saviors of the Broken: My Chemical Romance Expand "The Black Parade," 10 Years On

Ten years after My Chemical Romance released their magnum opus The Black Parade, the New Jersey emo-punk heroes will revisit it in a special double-disc set featuring a host of demos and outtakes.

After the success of their major-label breakthrough, 2004's dark, hook-filled Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, My Chemical Romance went a little deeper for their follow-up. Inspired by Queen and Pink Floyd sonically and The Beatles and David Bowie in terms of visualization, the band effectively morphed into the titular band for a concept album about a cancer patient's last days and experience with the afterlife.

The results were extraordinary, owing to both strong songwriting and slick production by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls). The album became their highest charting project, peaking at No. 2 in the United States and United Kingdom; lead single "Welcome to the Black Parade" became the band's only stateside Top 10 hit and topped the U.K. charts. (Follow-ups "Famous Last Words" and "Teenagers" also cracked the U.K. Top 10.)

Devotion to MCR and The Black Parade was high enough that when the band's official Twitter account teased the reissue, fans began holding out hope that the band's Black Parade-era lineup (singer Gerard Way, his brother Mikey on bass, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero and drummer Bob Bryar, who left the group in 2010) would be ending their 2013 breakup. (This is unfortunately not the case.)

But the 10th anniversary edition of The Black Parade will be celebrated as a 2CD or 3LP set, featuring a bonus disc of 11 unreleased demos and outtakes entitled Living with Ghosts. Final versions of "My Way Home is Through You" and "Kill All Your Friends" were issued as B-sides, and lead track "The Five of Us Are Dying" is an early version of the title track.

The Black Parade marches again on September 23. CD pre-order links are live; check back for the 3LP link soon, and check out the track list below!

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Aw, yes! More peasants who made themselves multi-millionaires through capitalism by selling pop songs about how bad multi-millinaires capitalists are! Just like Pink Floyd and R.E.M.! Gotta love them though! I buy their shit so it's all good! 🙂
