We’re continuing our Movie Monday with a look at the most recent soundtrack releases from Varese Sarabande’s CD Club!

It’s all “B”s in Varese Sarabande’s newest CD Club batch, but these are all A-list scores! The label is expanding two great sci-fi/action scores–Basil Poledouris’ RoboCop 3 (1993) and Marco Beltrami’s Hellboy (2004)–and releasing a special reissue of John Barry’s Jagged Edge (1985).

There’s no superhero quite like Hellboy. As depicted in the Dark Horse Comic of the same name, this demon was summoned by Nazis as an infant but quickly intercepted by Allies to work for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Despite his terrifying appearance–very large and very red, with a right hand made of stone and a gruff face framed by filed-off horns and a lantern of a jaw–his wisecracking, dry humor has made him quite popular as the World’s Greatest Paranormal Investigator. A film like Hellboy needs some style, and director Guillermo del Toro and star Ron Perlman make for a comic book adaptation done right.

Beltrami’s score, a fan favorite, finally gets the treatment it deserves on CD. This two-disc set features the complete score, newly remixed and remastered as to remove a bizarre artifact issue on original pressings. A fantastic cover utilizing key art by Drew Struzan is the cherry on top of this killer new release, limited to 3,000 copies.

Detroit’s favorite cyborg enforcer is back on the scene, with a killer score to boot! RoboCop 3 found Basil Poledouris returning to the franchise whose epic original score he scored in 1987. While it looks and feels a little different, with Robert John Burke replacing Peter Weller in the RoboCop suit and the sardonic carnage making way for camp (ninja cyborgs!), Poledouris’ familiar themes are welcome once more. This single-disc set, limited to 2,000 copies, greatly improves upon the far too short original album.

john-barry-jagged-edge-ostFinally, John Barry’s score to Jagged Edge is sharpened considerably. The film, scripted by rising star screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, featured Jeff Bridges as a man accused of murder, Glenn Close as the lawyer who defended him while falling in love with him, Robert Loggia as her star private eye and Peter Coyote as the ruthless prosecuting D.A. Barry’s music, equal parts romantic and suspenseful, was released on LP (and later as an early CD Club title)–but neither pressing featured cue breaks, just two sides of vinyl (or 13 nameless cues). Now, not only are the cues named–they’re resequenced, for a whole new perspective on the score. This disc’s limited to 1,000 copies and unfortunately is sold out as of this writing.  Watch Screen Archives for potential availability!
