So Good It’s Scary! Varese Plans “Little Box of Horrors”

BUY NOW FROM VARESESARABANDE.COM

Those soundtrack geniuses at Varese Sarabande have scared up some appropriate soundtrack news for Halloween, announcing a box set next month that will collect a dozen rare, unreleased and out of print horror scores from across five decades!

The Little Box of Horrors is a 12CD set featuring spooky soundtracks to films from an Emmy-nominated 1968 adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde all the way to Wes Craven’s Dracula 2000. There’s a pair of scores by Jerry Goldsmith for occult pictures (The Mephisto Waltz and The Other), Howard Shore’s score to David Cronenberg’s gory, acclaimed remake of The Fly; plus slashers great (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream) and small (1980 guerrilla film Maniac).

Best of all, collectors will note that seven of the 12 scores are out of print in their various forms. One, Charles Bernstein’s score to Wes Craven’s sci-fi horror flick Deadly Friend, makes its debut on CD in this box, while three scores–Bob Cobert’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Richard Stone’s Pumpkinhead and Marco Beltrami’s Dracula 2000–are available here for the first time anywhere.

Little Box of Horrors, packaged in a black carrying case reminiscent of the label’s LP-to-CD subscription service (and including a 24-page booklet of liner notes written by author Randall Larson), looks to be the perfect gift for the horror music maven in your life. The set will go on sale on the label’s official site Friday, November 18 at 10 a.m. PST, with a price tag of $99. See the full list of titles in the box below!
