Though they may not be a household name outside their native Netherlands, Dutch rockers Golden Earring are the subject of a comprehensive box set to be released next month.
The Complete Studio Recordings collects 26 (!) of the group's albums released between 1965 and 2015 (!), with an additional three discs of single and B-side material. Eighteen of these albums reached the Top 10 on the Dutch charts, with seven (including their most recent full-length album, 2012's Tits 'N Ass), reaching No. 1.
Golden Earring are true rock 'n' roll survivors: founded by teenagers George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen in 1961 (and known for several years as "The Golden Earrings"), they went from teen-friendly pop-rock band to hard rock masters, capable of stretching songs out with sturdy instrumental work both in studio and onstage. The band's core members to this day are Kooymans, Gerritsen and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Barry Hay (a member since 1967) and drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk (part of the group since 1970), though various additional members have joined through the '60s, '70s and '80s.
Though their success didn't often spread to the rest of Europe or the Americas, Golden Earring enjoyed a brief flirtation with Western charts, and in fact did so nearly a decade apart. In 1973, the rollicking "Radar Love," reached the Top 10 in not only The Netherlands (their third No. 1) but the United States and United Kingdom as well. Then, in 1982, the pulsating New Wave cut "Twilight Zone" reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. (1984's "When the Lady Smiles" failed to reach the success of "Twilight Zone," but was another smash hit in the homeland that also performed strongly in Canada.)
With comprehensive liner notes by local journalist Tjerk Lammers, Golden Earring's Complete Studio Recordings is a fitting tribute to a band that's been rocking for over five decades. The box is due out February 10 and can be pre-ordered below!
