Pink Floyd Goes Into "Interstellar Overdrive" On Record Store Day

March 20, 2017 By Joe Marchese 4 Comments

On Record Store Day - Saturday, April 22 - Pink Floyd will unveil a new 12-inch single featuring a previously unreleased 1966 instrumental recording.

The mono single of "Interstellar Overdrive" will be a one-sided 12-inch, 180-gram black vinyl release, and will play at 33 1/3 RPM. The single will be packaged with a fold-out poster and an A6 postcard featuring an image of the band taken during the recording of the debut single "Arnold Layne."

Written and performed by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason, this 1966 version of "Interstellar Overdrive" clocks in at close to 15 minutes long. The original recording was made at the Thomson studio in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire in November, 1966, before the Floyd signed to EMI. A different, shorter version of the composition subsequently appeared on the band's debut long-player, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.  The images adorning the single artwork have been taken from Pink Floyd's performance at UFO at the Blarney Club, London, on January 13, 1967.

This limited edition vinyl single from Pink Floyd Records via Sony will be available exclusively through your favorite local independent record store on Saturday, April 22!

You mean there wasn't room for this in the Floyd's mega-box? Actually there was, as CD1 from the Cambridge St/ation volume runs a little under 53 minutes. Classic "but wait, there's more" move.

The date came right from the press release...perhaps November 30 is the date they meant.
