Released late in the summer of 1966, the ninth album by Motown's powerhouse vocal trio (Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson) reads like a who's-who of pop and Detroit soul, with a slew of covers (mostly from the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team) given that Supremes treatment. Here, you'll find versions of The Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine (is Weak for You)," The Four Tops' "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)," "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)," The Temptations' "Get Ready"; and even the first Motown hit, Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)." The album also features covers of Lee Hazelwood ("These Boots Are Made for Walking," made famous by Nancy Sinatra) and Wes Farrell and Bert Berns (The McCoys' No. 1 classic "Hang On Sloopy"). With H-D-H hard at work on crafting hits for Motown's stable, half the album's production duties are carried out by the duo of Hal Davis and Frank Wilson.
And there are a pair of new hits, too. The sublime H-D-H tune "Love is Like An Itching in My Heart" stalled at No. 9 on the pop charts (following the near-miss of "My World is Empty Without You" to top the Billboard Hot 100) and nearly cost the trio their "lock" on The Supremes' cutting their A-list material. But the follow-up, "You Can't Hurry Love," is the perfect mix of singable, sincere lyrics, flawless delivery from Diana, Mary and Flo and a crack backing track from The Funk Brothers. It becomes their seventh No. 1 single, and The Supremes A' Go-Go also tops the pop album charts, knocking The Beatles' Revolver from the pole position and becoming the first album by an all-female group to reach the summit of the charts.
The sterling tradition of Supremes and Diana Ross deluxe editions, often carried out in the digital realm, turns a beautiful corner with this 2CD expanded release, due in stores April 28. This release has got it all: mono and stereo mixes of the original album, a whopping 29 bonus tracks (24 of which are heard here for the first time!) and not one, but two booklets: one featuring splendid liner notes by producers Andy Skurow and George Solomon, and one replicating the group's souvenir tour program from 1966! Bonus cuts include outtakes of covers of The Miracles ("Mickey's Monkey"), Jackie DeShannon (the Bacharach-David staple "What the World Needs Now"), The Rolling Stones ("(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"), Stevie Wonder ("Uptight (Everything's Alright)") and Tom Jones ("It's Not Unusual")--plus two new remixes of "Love is Like An Itching In My Heart" and a specially-created duet version of "Shake Me, Wake Me" that joins the original lineups of The Supremes and The Four Tops.

I'm so happy to see this Supremes album, deluxe edition, released on CD!! Now I'll have the real pleasure of reading the booklet information, appreciating the original 60's photography, and of course I'll take notice of any musicians, producers, arrangers mentioned.
I hope this is the start of Motown's product being given the wonderful treatment Hip-oSelect.com gave to all their releases!
Great that they're putting this out on CD. I was SO angry at them for releasing the 50th Anniversary edition of The Supremes' Merry Christmas on download only. I hope they will rectify that ignorant decision when the holidays roll around again. I know there is a substantial part of the music purchasing public who, like me, will NEVER buy anything as ephemeral as a download, especially of a revered classic by The Supremes. The people who put these things out need to recognize that!
I prefer physical cds as well, but will default to downloads if that is the only option. Have you gotten into the digital only Motown Unrelease series? If you haven't then you're really missing out. I use itunes and then burn a physical copy for my car. The latest in the series, 1966, had some real gems on it.

this was the first album on the Motown Records label to go to #1 on the Billboard Albums Chart and also the first ever girl group album to go to #1 on that chart.

I think its because both those songs were recorded during 1966 during the recording period after the groups I Hear A Symphony album. Much like Mother Dear is from the More Hits album, Heatwave and Same Old Song are from the Sings HDH album and Misery Makes It's Heart and What the World Needs Now are both from their Reflections album. All those songs were recorded during 1966. It's too bad they never found a Live concert version of LILAIIMH to include... #Sad
I can't wait for this release! Hopefully there be more by other Motown artist.

The ending of the brilliant Hip-O-Select series is a loss I still feel. Such beautiful packaging, remastering and liner notes.

The Supremes studio albums rarely get this treatment, very cool. They need to re-release their more obscure albums on CD, like "We Remember Sam Cooke".
