From deep within the heart of Memphis to your stereo, the rich legacy of Stax Records will be honored this year as two label partners join forces to commemorate the label's 60th anniversary.
Rolling Stone reported yesterday a massive campaign to celebrate Stax artists and albums across physical and digital formats. Notably, this initiative will be carried out by both owners of the Stax catalogue: Rhino/Warner Music Group, which controls much of the label's Atlantic-distributed output from 1957 to 1968, and Concord Bicycle Music, handler of the Stax masters released from 1968 to the mid-1970s, when the label declared bankruptcy.
Founded by siblings Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton (whose surnames gave the label its moniker), Stax Records was to the South what Motown was to Detroit: a pioneer in locally sourced, gritty soul and R&B. With crack house band Booker T. & The MG's at the fore (an integrated group which included keyboardist Booker T. Jones, guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and drummer Al Jackson, Jr.) and a stable of stars like Sam & Dave, Otis Redding and Carla Thomas, there seemed little Stax could not achieve. The label weathered major setbacks in the mid-'60s, notably the tragic loss of Redding in an airplane crash and a split with distributor Atlantic Records when they were sold to Warner Bros. The independent Stax soldiered on with legends like William Bell, The Staple Singers and Isaac Hayes, all of whom helped define '70s soul in many ways.
The release plans of the Stax 60 campaign will include:
- Stax Classics: available May 19, 10 affordable hits collections from the label's biggest names will be released on CD and digitally, all featuring new liner notes.
- Vinyl: five new LP reissues of famous and underrated Stax titles are already available for pre-order. April 28 will see the reissue of the 1973 self-titled solo album by John Gary Williams, frontman for The Mad Lads (Amazon U.S. / Amazon Canada); May 26 will welcome the soundtrack to the 1971 blaxploitation film Sweet Sweetbacks' Baadasssss Song, written by star/writer/director/co-producer Melvin Van Peebles and performed by a then-unknown Earth, Wind & Fire (Amazon U.S. / Amazon Canada); and June 23 is the reissue date for three Otis Redding LPs: 1965's The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads (Amazon U.S.), 1966's The Soul Album (Amazon U.S.) and 1967's collaboration with Carla Thomas, King & Queen (Amazon U.S. / Amazon Canada).
- The Complete Stax/Volt Singles, Vol. 4: the latest installment in the box set series, which spanned three volumes in 1991, 1993 and 1994 (totaling some 28 discs!), will include buried treasures on Stax and Volt along with subsidiaries Enterprise, Hip, Chalice, Gospel Truth and others. No release date has been set.
- Additional box sets: Isaac Hayes: The Spirit of Memphis (1962-1976) will tell Hayes' "hot buttered soul" story across four CDs in August, while Concord and Rhino will jointly issue a triple-disc Stax 60th anniversary set.
- Digital catalogue clean-up: expect many Stax albums from Conord and Rhino to be remastered in high-resolution and offered on high-end digital partners as well as Mastered for iTunes. For the hardcore fans, additional rare Stax/Volt LPs will make their way to digital channels for the first time.
Look for more info on the Stax 60 campaign as it develops! In the meantime, you can pre-order the Stax Classics collections now at the links below, where track lists also sit.

David Nichols says
Mike, in paragraph 3, don't you mean "little they could not achieve"? Love your work.
Mike Duquette says
Indeed, David! That's what I get for typing late at night. Thanks for the correction!
Zubb says
Not very interested in more hits collections. I'd rather see a comprehensive catalog reissue program, perhaps mini LP CD packaging replicating the great album cover art of the label, especially those striking Issac Hayes albums.
