Rhino Plans Plush Box Set for Stone Temple Pilots’ ‘Core’

Rhino Records will celebrate Stone Temple Pilots’ debut album with a multi-format reissue this fall.

Core introduced the world to STP’s raw fusion of grunge and album-oriented rock, a combination the band said was intentional. “You know how when you listen to a Led Zeppelin album, you listen to the entire album, not just the odd song?” bassist Robert DeLeo asked of Core. “We wanted to make a record like that. We wanted to create a vibe which would run right through the whole album.”

DeLeo, his older brother Dean on guitar and drummer Eric Kretz were fronted by the endlessly captivating frontman and lyricist Scott Weiland, the closest thing the ’90s got to a Jim Morrison figure–with enough vocal and lyrical muscle behind the sinew and smolder. Core became the band’s bestselling album, moving eight million copies and earning their first of many rock smash hits with “Plush,” which topped Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock chart and peaked within the Top 10 of the Alternative chart. “Sex Type Thing” and “Creep” also earn consistent airplay to this day.

STP moved from strength to strength through the decade, before dissolving in 2002. Weiland joined Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum of Guns N’ Roses to form Velvet Revolver, which recorded and toured from 2004 to 2008; afterward, Stone Temple Pilots reunited through 2013, when Weiland parted ways with the band (who carried on with the late Chester Bennington of Linkin Park). Weiland died in late 2015.

The remastered Core will be part of a deluxe box set that includes unreleased demos, B-sides, material from three live shows (including the band’s 1993 performance on MTV Unplugged) and a 5.1 surround mix of the album on DVD. The 12″ x 12″ deluxe box, limited to 15,000 copies also features the album on vinyl and a hardcover book of rare photographs. A double-disc cutdown featuring the first two discs of the box will be available, as will the newly remastered album on its own. (A web-exclusive bundle adds to the box set a replica 7″ single of “Plush,” a t-shirt and a lithograph.

The box will hit stores September 29. Full specs, pre-order links and track lists are below!
