Disney’s Legacy Collection returns with a first-ever complete soundtrack release for the 1973 animated classic Robin Hood.  Disc 1 of this 2-CD set includes the original songs and score from the film (28 tracks overall), penned by writers including Roger Miller, George Bruns, Floyd Huddleston, and Johnny Mercer. Disc 2 spotlights 13 tracks of bonus material including previously unreleased demos and the entirety of Louis Prima’s Let’s Hear It for Robin Hood album.  It’s all packaged within a beautiful hardcover book featuring liner notes, lyrics, concept art, and more!  Read all about it right here.

Randy Newman, Dark Matter (Nonesuch) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

The undisputed master of, well, dark matter returns with his first studio album of new material since 2008’s Harps and Angels…and it’s every bit as delicious as you’d expect.  Songs ranging from wickedly satirical to beautifully heartfelt include “Putin,” “Sonny Boy,” “Wandering Boy,” and “Lost Without You.”  A vinyl release arrives on August 18.

Real Gone celebrates the legacy of Paisley Underground band Rain Parade with this new reissue.  It combines the band’s Emergency LP and Explosions EP on one CD, and includes the song “Look Both Ways” which was not included on the original U.S. version of the LP.  The CD has been newly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision and the remaster has been approved by Matt Piucci and Steven Roback.  It also features liner notes by Paisley Underground historian Pat Thomas with quotes from Piucci and Roback.

Jimmy Reed, Mr. Luck: The Complete Vee-Jay Singles (Concord/Craft Recordings) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Jimmy Reed’s songs like “Big Boss Man” and “Baby What You Want Me to Do” became part of the classic blues lexicon, and his songbook has inspired covers by artists including Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Etta James and Elvis Presley, just to name a few.  Now, Craft Recordings has collected Reed’s complete singles on the Vee-Jay label (88 sides in all) in newly remastered form on one complete box set.

Here’s a nice one we missed: La-La Land has generously expanded Henry Mancini’s richly melodic, fun-filled soundtrack to Blake Edwards’ The Great Race to epic proportions!  This 3-CD set features the complete original score on two CDs, including a handful of outtakes, while the third disc has a remastered version of Mancini’s original RCA soundtrack album, recorded specifically for home listening and emphasizing the score’s themes in compact arrangements.  A full-color 24-page booklet has Jeff Bond’s new essay and track-by-track annotations to place it all into perspective!  The Great Race has never sounded greater!

JOE MARCHESE (Editor) joined The Second Disc shortly after its launch in early 2010, and has since penned daily news and reviews about classic music of all genres. In 2015, Joe formed the Second Disc Records label. Celebrating the great songwriters, producers and artists who created the sound of American popular song, Second Disc Records, in conjunction with Real Gone Music, has released newly-curated collections produced by Joe from iconic artists such as Johnny Mathis, Bobby Darin, Laura Nyro, Melissa Manchester, Chet Atkins, and many others. He has contributed liner notes to reissues from a diverse array of artists, among them Nat "King" Cole, Paul Williams, Lesley Gore, Dusty Springfield, B.J. Thomas, The 5th Dimension, Burt Bacharach, The Mamas and the Papas, Carpenters, Perry Como, Rod McKuen, Doris Day, Jackie DeShannon, and Andy Williams, and has compiled releases for talents including Robert Goulet and Keith Allison of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Over the past two decades, Joe has also worked in a variety of capacities on and off Broadway as well as at some of the premier theatres in the U.S., including Lincoln Center Theater, George Street Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, and the York Theatre Company. He has felt privileged to work on productions alongside artists such as the late Jack Klugman, Eli Wallach, Arthur Laurents, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 2009, Joe began contributing theatre and music reviews to the print publication The Sondheim Review, and in 2012, he joined the staff of The Digital Bits as a regular contributor writing about film and television on DVD and Blu-ray. Joe currently resides in the suburbs of New York City.
