Intrada, La-La Land and Lakeshore Records have some delightful soundtrack titles available or forthcoming right now, including rediscovered musical works for some major blockbusters of the '80s and '90s.
Last week, Intrada reissued Pino Donaggio's score to Body Double, Brian De Palma's erotically-charged thriller about a claustrophobic actor mixed up in a nightmarish murder mystery. Craig Wassen and Melanie Griffith star, De Palma co-writes, produces and directs; and Donaggio marks his fourth collaboration with the director after composing scores to Carrie (1976), Home Movies (1979), Dressed to Kill (1980) and Blow Out (1981). The sensuous themes were made unusual by Donaggio's decision to silence the trumpets in the brass section for a more oddly intense experience. And now Body Double sounds better than ever: previously released by Intrada in 2008, this new pressing is sourced from higher-quality masters than the original release, offering sharper audio and better stereo sound as well as a bonus track: Jonathan Elias' trailer music.
La-La Land has another pivotal score from 1984: Romancing the Stone. This wild action caper, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner (in a Golden Globe Award-winning role) as an unlikely pair: a smuggler and a romance novelist teaming up in Central America to rescue Turner's character's sister--and if they're lucky, find some hidden treasure, too. This blockbuster hit established Robert Zemeckis as a credible director of hits after years of fun but little-seen comedies, and gave him a crucial partner in composer Alan Silvestri, whose heroic score was one of the film's many highlights. A year later, the duo teamed up on an even more successful project: Back to the Future, co-written and directed by Zemeckis and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Long out-of-print after its release on Varese Sarabande in 2002, La-La Land's pressing, limited to 2000 copies, features additional unreleased and unused music on one disc, remixed by Mike Matessino (who oversaw Silvestri's Back to the Future trilogy on disc in 2015). Matessino and Nick Redman produce, Jeff Bond writes liner notes and Jim Titus designs the package, taking Drew Struzan's iconic keyart as its central image. Romancing the Stone is available now!
Next, La-La Land goes from the jungle to the ocean, offering an ambitious expansion of James Newton Howard's score to the 1995 action film Waterworld. The most expensive movie ever made at the time of release, Waterworld was set on a post-apocalyptic Earth where the ice caps have melted. Kevin Costner (reuniting with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves director Kevin Reynolds) plays The Mariner, a lone warrior who leads a child and her guardian (Jeanne Tripplehorn) on a quest to find the mythical "Dryland," avoiding capture from the villainous Smokers and their fanatical leader Deacon (Dennis Hopper). Howard was a replacement for composer Mark Isham (whose music box theme is all that appears in the film), and this double-disc presentation offers twice the music of the original soundtrack, restoring this score to the action epic status it deserves. Here, Matessino masters and co-produces alongside Dan Goldwasser, whose package design features liner notes from Tim Grieving and an unused Drew Struzan art piece as its cover! Limited to 3000 copies, Waterworld "ships" (get it?) August 30.
"We have such sights to show you!" Christopher Young and Lakeshore Records will celebrate the 30th anniversary of horror master Clive Barker's unsettling supernatural feature Hellraiser with a newly remixed version of the original soundtrack album. Adapting his own novella The Hellbound Heart for the screen, Barker terrified audiences with the story of the Lament Configuration, a mysterious puzzle box which unlocks another dimension and unleashes the Cenobites, a quartet of sadomasochistic beings led by Pinhead (Doug Bradley). Eight sequels (none involving Barker and seven starring Bradley) have been released in the three decades since, with a ninth forthcoming.
Horror score master Christopher Young, known for his work on Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985) and Urban Legend (1998), composed the Hellraiser score after the studio insisted on a traditional score instead of work by electronic group Coil. This new pressing of the soundtrack (on CD or translucent red/black smoke LP) offers no new material, but does feature Young's new mix of his music from the original 24-track 2" session tapes! (The LP also features restored photography and artwork, plus the "long lost" original theatrical sales sheet.) The CD hits stores September 15, while the LP is due October 6.
