Various Artists, Produced by Tony Visconti (Edsel)
In the course of a career spanning seven decades, Tony Visconti has produced seminal albums in the classic rock genre including high profile collaborations with David Bowie, T. Rex, Gentle Giant, Strawbs, and Badfinger. But Visconti's C.V. runs much deeper, from folk (Ralph McTell, Tom Paxton) to musical theatre (Elaine Paige) and everything in between (Sparks). Edsel now releases the first large-scale tribute to Visconti's enormous musical legacy. Produced by Tony Visconti has been curated by its subject. It will be available in a variety of formats including 4 CDs, 6 LPs, and 2 LPs, with the 6LP edition including a signed print by Visconti. The CD box boasts 77 tracks from the producer's distinguished career, while the LP box offers 73 and the highlights 2LP set has 30 songs. Phil Kinrade has mastered all audio at AIR Mastering with Visconti's approval. The 4CD version has an 80-page booklet with an introduction by Visconti, track-by-track notes by Mark Paytress, artist tributes, and previously unpublished photographs. The 6LP vinyl edition is strictly limited to 1,000 units, with each LP pressed on 140-gram vinyl and a 60-page booklet included. Artwork for both formats was designed by the Barnbrook studio. Goo Goo Dolls, Live at The Academy New York City 1995 (Warner Records)
Goo Goo Dolls' Live At The Academy, New York, City, 1995 features two breakthrough sets from the band: a memorable performance for the CMJ Music Conference, recorded just as they were starting to enjoy their first success on the radio; and an invite-only soundcheck that became treasured by fans when it was taped off radio performances. A mobile recording truck captured the entire thing, and the fruits of that work will be presented on two CDs or three LPs. Get more details here.
Bob Dylan, Mixing Up the Medicine / A Retrospective (Columbia/Legacy)
Next Tuesday, October 24, publishing house Callaway will release Mixing Up the Medicine, a 600+-page tome promised to be "the most comprehensive book yet published on the work of Nobel Prize-winning singer-songwriter-poet and cultural icon, Bob Dylan." As entire libraries could be filled with the books written on Dylan, that's no small boast - but this hefty coffee table volume looks like it might live up to the hype. Written and edited by Mark Davidson and Parker Fishel, the book celebrates both Dylan himself and The Bob Dylan Center, the expansive Tulsa, Oklahoma museum that opened to the public in May 2022 which has become ground zero for studies of the artist's life and work. Though the book is massive - filled with over 1,100 images by 135 photographers plus 30 original essays, an introduction by Sean Wilentz, and an epilogue by Douglas Brinkley - its companion CD/LP is a brief Dylan primer with just a dozen tracks spanning 1964-2000 including "Blowin' in the Wind," "Tangled Up in Blue," and "Things Have Changed." Tim Easton, Special 20 / Not Cool (Black Mesa)
Guitarist-singer-songwriter Tim Easton, a fixture on the Americana scene, revisits his 1998 debut album Special 20 in a new 25th anniversary edition. Produced by Brad Jones and Robin Eaton, the Nashville-recorded album introduced Easton's rock-and-roll-meets-folk voice, with songs inspired by his college days as well as his time in Europe as a street troubadour. The long out-of-print Special 20 will be reissued on both vinyl and CD. It's joined today on CD and LP by Easton's 2013 studio album Not Cool. Recording in Music City, Easton welcomed veterans (bassist Joe Fick, guitarist JD Simo and drummer Jon Radford), and newcomers (violinist Megan Palmer and guitarist Sadler Vaden) alike to record the set that ended up on American Songwriter's "best-of" list for the year. The album of which Easton remains proud ("Not Cool is the record, from start to finish, that I call my best album") is ripe for rediscovery.
