Rhino Records is planning 11 titles for this year's Record Store Day Black Friday--and two of them are fairly unexpected catalogue treats from two very different artists.
First up, the label has announced an upcoming expanded edition on CD and LP of Richard Hell & The Voidoids' Blank Generation. Hell, a founding member of Television and one of the key figures of early punk rock in New York and beyond (his personal style of spiked hair and safety pins is said to have influenced Malcolm McLaren's Sex shop and the look of the Sex Pistols), formed The Voidoids with guitarists Ivan Julian and Robert Quine (later of Lou Reed's band in the early '80s) plus drummer Marc Bell (who a year later would change his name to Marky Ramone and drum for the Ramones). Blank Generation remains a touchstone of punk's original wave; Robert Christgau cheekily decreed it was perfect "for those very special occasions when I feel like turning into a nervous wreck." This expanded 2CD or 2LP edition, available November 24 as an "RSD First" release at 2500 units on each format, restores the album's original cover and running order on the first disc (remastered by the album's original engineer, Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound) and includes a 12-track bonus disc with alternate takes, live tracks recorded at legendary New York City punk club CBGB and more.
Y Kant Tori Read? This was an unusual question some intrepid synthpop fans were asking themselves at the top of 1988, when Atlantic Records issued a new album with a striking redheaded woman on the sleeve. Though no one knew it at the time--her surname isn't even in the liner notes--that woman was Tori Amos, a few years removed from the dark, confessional songwriting she is known for today. Y Kant Tori Read was actually a band instead of a solo project--future Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum and keyboardist Kim Bullard (who's performed with Elton John, "Weird Al" Yankovic and others) were contributors, while Cheap Trick's Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen were among the album's background vocalists--and while Amos was quick to disown it after the release of her breakthrough Little Earthquakes (1992), its cult following only grew, with CD and LP copies commanding insane prices on the secondary market. Amos finally reappraised it this year, recently making it available digitally, and now it's getting its first physical reissue on Black Friday (also an "RSD First" title), with 4000 LPs and 3500 CDs made available to indie retailers.
If that didn't get you excited, another nine "RSD First" titles are also on the list from Rhino. Check them all out below, as well as the track lists to the Richard Hell and Y Kant Tori Read!

I had a feeling the Tori Amos album would eventually be rereleased on CD.
