Don't Leave Your Love Behind: Real Gone's March Slate Includes Jackie DeShannon and Axe

Earlier today we told you Second Disc Records and Real Gone Music's upcoming 2-CD collection of The Oak Ridge Boys' Columbia period and RCA singles.  Now, Real Gone has announced two more titles joining it on March 2.

First up is a collection from a legendary singer-songwriter: Jackie DeShannon.  Stone Cold Soul: The Complete Capitol Recordings gathers all of DeShannon's material from her short period on the venerable label from 1970-1971.  It also includes liner notes by our own Joe Marchese, featuring quotes from his new interview with DeShannon.

After her decade on Liberty had made her a superstar, Jackie DeShannon moved to Capitol with the promise of more creative freedom. Her first project at the new label was to record an album with producer Chips Moman at American Studios in Memphis where classic records from B.J. Thomas, Elvis Presley and Dusty Springfield, among others, had been cut.  Sixteen songs were recorded there, including two DeShannon originals: "West Virginia Mine" and "Now That the Desert is Blooming."  She also covered several other notable songwriters including Goffin & King ("Child of Mine"), William Bell ("You Don't Miss Your Water (Til Your Well Runs Dry)"), Arlo Guthrie ("Gabriel's Mother's Highway"), Van Morrison ("And It Stoned Me") and George Harrison ("Isn't It a Pity").  The planned album, however, never came to pass and only two tracks would see the light of day during DeShannon's time at the label.  DeShannon would then go to Hollywood to record an additional nine songs which would go on to comprise her lone Capitol LP: Songs.  She contributed two more originals ("Salinas" and "Bad Water") and added a re-recorded "West Virginia Mine."  Other notable songwriters were also covered including Bob Dylan ("Lay Baby, Lay"), Hoyt Axton ("Ease Your Pain") and DeShannon's future husband, Randy Edelman ("Sunny Days").  "Show Me" from the Memphis sessions was used to bring the album up to ten songs.  DeShannon would soon have a chance meeting with Jerry Wexler and move to Atlantic Records, a period which is partially covered on Real Gone's 2015 All The Love: The Lost Atlantic Recordings.

In 2006, Songs received an expanded edition on RPM which premiered nine of the previously unreleased Memphis tracks.  Real Gone's new compilation premieres the remaining five unreleased tracks from the sessions, for a total of 25 tracks - all of the existing Capitol masters.  It has been newly remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision.

Next is Rock 'N' Roll Party: The Complete Atco Recordings from Axe.  The hard-rocking band from Florida was originally known as Babyface, whose members included Edgar Riley (vocals), Bobby Barth (guitar), Mike Turpin (bass) and Bob Miles (drums).  When second guitarist Michael Osborne joined in 1979, the group changed its name to Axe and signed with MCA that same year, releasing two albums.  They became known for their pop-metal sound.  Wayne Haner, a second bassist, joined when the group moved to Atco in 1981.  The band would release two albums at the label including 1982's Offering (featuring the hit anthem "Rock 'N' Roll Party in the Streets" and a cover of Montrose's "I Got the Fire") and 1983's Nemesis (featuring "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Heat in the Street").  The band toured with such groups as the Scorpions, Kiss, ZZ Top, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.  However, they suffered a tragedy in 1984 when Osborne was killed in an auto accident which seriously injured Barth.  The group disbanded although Barth embarked on a solo career following his recovery.  After a few false starts, Axe reformed in 1996 with a revised line-up.  They would continue through 2000, releasing four albums.  The band then broke up again, with some compilations and a live album being released in the 21st century.

The two albums first appeared on CD in 2003 from Wounded Bird.  Real Gone's new compilation collects both Atco albums and adds "Midnight (Drives Me Mad)," which only appeared on cassette editions of Nemesis and on a single.  Scott Schinder has provided new liner notes.

If you would like to give either of these titles a try, we've got the full tracklistings and preorder links below.

The Axe tracklist on Amazon differs, as it includes two single versions, but not “Midnight Drives Me Mad”. I reached out to Real Gone on Twitter, but have yet to receive a response.

We’ve reached out to Real Gone and have confirmed that the track listing in the article and on RGM’s website is correct. The single versions were just different edits and not different recordings or mixes, and will not be included. The Amazon track listing is incorrect. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Good news about new material from the Moman sessions, let’s hope they don’t botch the remastering like they did with Dusty’s Brand New Me sessions.

Agreed. Mike Milchner handled the "Faithful" set, which bodes well for the new DeShannon set, whereas Ted Carfrae was credited with remixing the "Complete Philadelphia" sessions.
