Let Me Introduce You to the Family: Rhino U.K. Plans Reissues of Early Stranglers Catalogue

February 27, 2018 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

BUY NOW ON AMAZON.CO.UK

As British punk icons The Stranglers ready a tour through the United Kingdom in March, Rhino’s U.K. division are planning a new set of definitive reissues of the band’s first seven albums, originally released on United Artists and Liberty Records between 1977 and 1981.

Due March 9, these single-disc remasters handily supplant a series of expansions issued in 2001, with even more bonus tracks present this time around. Rattus Norvegicus (1977), No More Heroes (1977), Black and White (1978), Live (X-Cert) (1979), The Raven (1979), The Gospel According to the Meninblack (1981) and La Folie (1981) are augmented with every extra track included on bonus singles included with the original album pressings, non-LP singles and B-sides, and even tracks from other territories (like a French version of 1979 single “Don’t Bring Harry” and cuts included on the U.S.-only album IV in 1980).

Except for 1981’s La Folie, each of these albums all hit the U.K. Top 10 and spun off multiple hit singles, including the Top 10s “Peaches,” “Something Better Change,” “Straighten Out,” “No More Heroes” and “Golden Brown,” the band’s highest-charting song at No. 2.

The Stranglers continue to tour with two original members, singer/bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel and singer/keyboardist Dave Greenfield. (Drummer Jet Black retired from touring in 2015 but has played on every studio release through 2012’s Giants, while singer/guitarist Baz Warne has effectively filled in for original member Hugh Cornwall, who left the band in 1990.) Each of these new reissues will be available in U.K. stores March 9. Full track lists and order links are below!

Mike Duquette

Michael Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he discovered there was more than one version of John Williams' soundtrack to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, with bylines on catalog at Discogs, City Pages and Ultimate Prince and credits on titles including the Grammy-winning 'Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of "Weird Al" Yankovic.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with an ever-expanding collection of music.

Sometimes, you get the feeling that we’ve seen most of this before. What with the previous expanded 2 CD releases and the complete singles triple CD set, not to mention the original album series set. I’m not sure it’s worth buying these again. Something similar happened with the Buzzcocks albums, with original, then deluxe, then more deluxe versions.

    Maybe an ultimate box set?
