Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass? Omnivore Collects Volume 2 of Buck Owens' Complete Capitol Singles

March 23, 2018 By Joe Marchese 2 Comments

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Omnivore Recordings is headed back to Bakersfield with a new collection from the late, great Buck Owens due on May 11 in both CD and digital formats.  The Complete Capitol Singles: 1967-1970 picks up where Omnivore's last volume (1957-1966), released in late 2016, left off.  This 2-CD, 36-track set chronologically features every A- and B-side released by the Bakersfield, CA singer-songwriter at Capitol between 1967 and 1970, including fourteen top ten hits.

In his lifetime, Buck Owens accrued 21 chart-toppers on the U.S. Billboard Country chart - six of which are featured on this collection: the ode to a honky-tonk "Sam's Place," "Your Tender Loving Care," "How Long Will My Baby Be Gone," "Who's Gonna Mow Your Grass," a cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," and "Tall Dark Stranger."  Additionally, Omnivore's set includes six duets with Buck's frequent partner Susan Raye, and another two with his son, Buddy Alan (Owens).  Buck's seasonal single "Christmas Shopping" b/w "One of Everything You Got" is also included.  Naturally, the artist is backed on most tracks by the Buckaroos and guitarist Don Rich, Owens' most sympathetic musical collaborator.

The Complete Capitol Singles: 1967-1970 has been compiled by Patrick Milligan and newly remastered by Michael Graves.  Scott B. Bomar has penned new liner notes.  It's being released by Omnivore in conjunction with the Buck Owens Estate.  The label's press release quotes the late Owens on this period: "The reason my Capitol records sounded the way they did -- real heavy on the treble -- was because I knew most people were going to be listening to 'em on their AM car radios. At the time, nobody else was doing anything like that, but it just seemed like common sense to me. And it was one more reason that you knew it was a Buck Owens record as soon as it came on the radio -- because it just didn't sound like those other records."  These 36 rip-roarin', honky-tonkin' tracks are an example of why the Bakersfield Sound  is still one of the most potent in the entirety of the country music spectrum, and indeed, of American popular music itself.

Absolutely love what Omnivore is doing with Buck. I think it's the only place to get a lot of the singles in mono!
Also I hope they do a third volume of Buck 'Em to round up more rarities and album tracks. IMO, this is a way better approach to Buck than Bear Family's boxes.
