100% Fun: Intervention Records Launches Matthew Sweet Series On Vinyl and SACD

Intervention Records has announced a new Artist-Approved series on both LP and hybrid SACD from singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet covering his albums originally released on the Zoo Entertainment label between 1991 and 1995.  Throughout 2018, the label will issue generous expanded editions of his power-pop trilogy of Girlfriend, Altered Beast, and 100% Fun.  Additionally, Intervention will reissue the Son of Altered Beast seven-song EP for its vinyl debut!

Each of the three double-vinyl editions includes bonus tracks: six songs each on Girlfriend and Altered Beast, and seven on 100% Fun.  Many of these songs are either appearing on vinyl for the first time, or receiving their official debut anywhere.  All four releases have been remastered from the original analog master tapes by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound; the original 15-song track listings for both Girlfriend and Altered Beast have been spread across three sides of vinyl for superior sound.  (As always, Intervention’s website offers detailed mastering notes for those interested in learning how these reissues are prepared.)  The 180-gram vinyl will be pressed at RTI, and the three expanded editions boast sturdy, heavy Stoughton-printed gatefolds.  Son of Altered Beast features a single-pocket gatefold.

That’s not all.  The three Expanded Editions will also receive hybrid SACD releases, playable on all CD players.  These are mastered from the original tapes direct to DSD.  They are housed in Super Jewel Boxes.  The series kicks off in late May/early June with 100% Fun on vinyl, then Altered Beast and Son of Altered Beast in July/August, and finally, Girlfriend in October.  The hybrid SACD versions will arrive roughly a month or two following each vinyl release.

These titles are currently available for pre-order directly from Intervention Records individually or as a subscription series for either vinyl or hybrid SACD.  Watch this space for Amazon links, as well!

  1. All 3 are great albums. Does this mean the regular CD audio is remastered as well? Not that they needed remastering, but its nice they’re getting reissue treatment. Critics tend to focus on the Girlfriend album as his peak but actually I think the other 2, as well as ’97’s Blue Sky On Mars are at least as good. Also, 100% Fun is the one with the hit single on it.

    1. I think his streak continued through In Reverse as far as the cycle is concerned. Last year’s Tomorrow’s Daughter was a real highlight too.
