Various Artists, Technicolor Paradise: Rhum Rhapsodies and Other Exotic Delights (Numero Group)  (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Numero Group is conjuring up a world of tikis, palm trees, and colorful drinks - in other words, a Technicolor Paradise.  After years of successfully excavating the rarest soul, jazz, R&B, New Age, and more, the label has turned its attention to the realm of exotica.  The genre's blend of lounge, jazz, pop and all sounds beyond inspired a number of artists who didn't receive the same attention as, say, Martin Denny, Yma Sumac, Arthur Lyman, and Esquivel.  An alternate history of exotica appears on Technicolor Paradise: Rhum Rhapsodies and Other Exotic Delights, which is coming on 3 CDs (54 songs) or 3 LPs (48 songs).

Malo, Latin Bugaloo: The Warner Bros. Singles (Omnivore)  (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

Latin Bugaloo: The Warner Bros. Singles collects all fourteen A- and B-sides released by Latin rock band Malo on Warner Bros. Records between 1971 and 1973.  The Bay Area band blended funk, soul, rock, and jazz, and augmented its raw, powerful sound with a horn section.  As Malo was known for its extended jamming, all of the singles were cut down to radio-friendly length; accordingly, the tracks here have been sourced from the original single masters.  Latin Bugaloo includes the hit "Suavecito" as well as a single only released in Turkey containing "Pana" b/w "Just Say Goodbye."

Selections from Redhead/La Pelirroja (Stage Door Records) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

The U.K.'s Stage Door label brings together two albums related to the 1959 Broadway murder mystery musical Redhead.  The production, which starred Gwen Verdon and was directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, inspired a studio cast album of the Albert Hague/Dorothy Fields score.  The recording was made in London under the direction of Hill Bowen (leader of many Living Strings recordings for Camden) and featured Rita Williams, Bryan Johnson, Fred Lucas, and The Mike Sammes Singers.  This rare LP is being paired on one CD with RCA Victor Mexico's 1960 Mexican cast recording of the show.  Translated as La Pelirroja, it starred Virma Gonzalez, Armando Calvo, and the young Placido Domingo.  Three additional bonus tracks round out this CD: pop versions of Redhead songs by Tommy Leonetti, Art Lund, and Toni Arden.  This release is housed in a paper sleeve and is limited to 500 units.

It is so nice to finally have a new Jennifer Warnes album. If only it didn't take her 17 years to put out new music.

The Prince 45 is truly gorgeous. I've managed to avoid all of the other Prince vinyl reissues (originals FTW), but this was a fantastic release. Keep em coming, Estate...
