Go Insane: Lindsey Buckingham Announces Solo Anthology, New Tour

August 14, 2018 By Joe Marchese 10 Comments

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Fleetwood Mac shocked fans earlier this year by announcing the dismissal of longtime singer/songwriter/producer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham just as a new tour had been confirmed.  Now, Buckingham is back on his feet with a new collection and a tour of his own which will launch just days later than his old band's.  Solo Anthology - The Best of Lindsey Buckingham, due October 5 from Rhino Records, will be available as a 3-disc set on CD and digitally and also as a single disc "highlights" release. A 6-LP vinyl edition is slated for November 23.

Solo Anthology - The Best of Lindsey Buckingham features two discs of studio tracks and one of live performances.  It offers original and alternate versions of songs from Buckingham's solo albums including Law and Order (1981), Go Insane (1984), Out of the Cradle (1992), Under the Skin (1996), Gift of Screws (2008), Seeds We Sow (2011), and his most recent release, the joint album Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie (2017).  Other tracks are drawn from soundtrack appearances ("Holiday Road" and "Dancin' Across the USA" from National Lampoon's Vacation, "Time Bomb Town" from Back to the Future), while the Fleetwood Mac years are represented via solo live versions of "Go Your Own Way," "Never Going Back Again," and "Tusk."  Two previously unreleased tracks round out the set: "Hunger" and "Ride This Road."  (Unfortunately, nothing from Buckingham's first LP - the elusive Buckingham Nicks - is featured here.)

The artist will launch a North American tour on October 7 in Portland, Oregon and will continue through December 9 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  Tour dates can be viewed here.  All ticket purchasers will receive a copy of the single-disc anthology on CD or digital.  You can peruse the track listing for Solo Anthology - The Best of Lindsey Buckingham just below with pre-order links!

Finally! A release I am interested in. SO glad Lindsey included the two tracks from National Lampoon's Vacation. Not interested in seeing Fleetwood Mac on tour without Lindsey. They really do owe their greatest commercially successful years as a band largely to him. Shame on them for not realizing that fact. I will go see Lindsey if he plays my city.

Great news! I had to rip "Dancin' Cross the USA" from the WB National Lampoon DVD in mono back in the day to get it into my Lindsey mix! Great collection, but I wouldn't skip a single one of the proper albums (especially Out of the Cradle). And on opposite sides of the pop spectrum, my two favorite LPs of 2017 were Randy Newman's Dark Matter and the "Greatest Fleetwood Mac album never made", the pop-perfect, Buckingham/McVie. Interesting he chose his Stones cover of "I Am Waiting" over some other classic originals, but great looking comp - a must purchase!

Does anyone know why Buckingham/Nicks has never seen the light of day on official CD? I have a copy on the Korean Big Pink label that sounds fantastic but I'm pretty sure that's a semi-bootleg.

Both Stevie and Lindsey have the original tapes for Buckingham Nicks. The closest we came to getting it finally on CD was in 2013. During the Mac tour that year they added an unreleased demo to the setlist (Without You). There was talk of doing a full on Buckingham Nicks tour in 2014 where the album would be reissued and the tour would follow. Then Christine McVie said she wanted back into the band. This meant postponing everything that may have been planned. The end of 2014 and most of 2015 was spent touring with Christine back in the band. Stevie took 2016 and 2017 for a solo tour. This brings us to 2018 and things aren’t great between Stevie and Lindsey so it’s not looking good for a reissue.
As for what the hang up is, Lindsey doesn’t think it’s best work and wants to tweak it. Stevie thinks it’s fine as it is and should just come out. She put a track on her box set (Long Distance Winner) and on her last solo tour did one of the songs for the first time ever (Crying In The Night). Lindsey didn’t include anything on this upcoming collection, so I think he’s not really looking at it as anything he’s interested in reissuing now.

Boy, he sure gives short shrift to my personal favorite, his first solo album. Very much in the "Tusk" vein...

Looking forward to this, especially for the Vacation tracks. I can understand both sides of the Fleetwood Mac arguments. Buckingham definitely wants to continue to make new music. 15 years since the last Mac album. It doesn't matter to him that as a piece of overall earnings new music isn't significant. A new album probably wouldn't generate anywhere near the money that Fleetwood Mac, Rumors, Mirage and Tango in the Night individually turn over as catalog sales each year. Streaming revenue is a joke. Certainly nothing like the dollars a tour generates. Stevie Nicks stated publicly that making new music is hard. She, and apparently the other members, have decided that it makes more sense to give people what they want - to go out and play the hits. I'd rather have new Fleetwood Mac music with the lineup in tact. I'm also pretty negative on Neil Finn having joined the group. I'd rather him be making some version of his own music and can't particularly understand why he'd join up with Fleetwood Mac. But these aren't my choices to make. I can choose to see or not see these acts and the different configurations they've chosen as I have with many others.

This would have been the PERFECT moment to finally release the extended remix of 'Go Insane' and the extended version of 'Slow Dancing'. These two 12 inches still remain are unavailable on CD. There's enough space left on CD 3....
    Such a pity.

Does anyone know where the live tracks on CD 3 originally appeared? Are they from CDs or previous DVD releases?

Tracks 1-2, 5-8 and 11-13 are from "Songs from the Small Machine: Live in L.A." (2011)
Tracks 3-4 are from "One Man Show" (2012)
Tracks 9-10 are from "Live at the Bass Performance Hall" (2008)
