Bip Bop: Paul McCartney's Archive Collection Rolls On with Deluxe "Wild Life," "Red Rose Speedway"

2018 has delivered an embarrassment of riches for Beatle fans, including the Ultimate Mixes of John Lennon's Imagine, Paul McCartney's new album Egypt Station, and soon, the super deluxe anniversary box set of The Beatles, a.k.a. The White Album.  Today, McCartney upped the ante further with the announcement of not one, but two, new box sets in his ongoing Archive Collection series.  On December 7, Macca will release deluxe, expanded editions of his first two albums with Wings: 1971's Wild Life and 1973's Red Rose Speedway - plus a bundle with both complete sets and additional exclusive content. These mark the first Archive titles since March 2017's Flowers in the Dirt set.

Wild Life was the first Wings album but third overall by McCartney outside the shadow of his famous band.  Paul and his wife Linda teamed up with drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Denny Laine to create a relaxed, pastoral album that was intentionally as light as a feather.  Recording occurred over a little more than a week at Abbey Road (with Alan Parsons engineering alongside Tony Clark), and a number of songs were recorded in just one take.  "Dear Friend" - a response to John Lennon's scathing "How Do You Sleep" which was, in turn, a response to Paul's "Too Many People" - was a holdover from the Ram sessions.  Recording took place from July 25-August 2, 1971, and on that latter date, McCartney announced the birth of Wings to the world.  Wild Life arrived on December 7, making No. 10 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 11 on the U.K. Albums Chart but was generally considered a commercial disappointment; it yielded no hit singles.  Wild Life was eventually certified Gold in the United States, and has since become a cult favorite for its loose, freewheeling sensibility and homespun sound.  The super deluxe 3CD/1DVD edition features:

  • The remastered original album on CD 1;
  • Eight rough mixes on CD 2;
  • 17 bonus tracks on CD 3 including home recordings, outtakes, the single version of "Love Is Strange," and both sides of Wings' controversial debut single, "Give Ireland Back to the Irish";
  • A DVD with four featurettes; and
  • A download card with 24bit/96kHz unlimited high-resolution audio download of the remastered album and bonus audio.

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

The second Archive Collection box is dedicated to Wild Life's follow-up, 1973's Red Rose Speedway.  In early 1972, the McCartneys had made the decision to expand Wings to a quintet with the addition of guitarist Henry McCullough.  Recording began in March of that year, though once again Paul tapped the reserve of songs recorded during the Ram sessions for a couple of tracks.  The album was originally planned as a double LP, and sessions continued at various studios throughout the year.  It was preceded in March 1973 by the release of "My Love" as a single; the ravishing ballad marked a return to classic form for McCartney, and spent four weeks atop the U.S. Hot 100; it made a not-unimpressive No. 9 on the U.K. Singles Chart.  When Red Rose Speedway finally reached stores on April 30 (U.S.) and May 4 (U.K.) 1973, it had been trimmed to a single LP.    The super deluxe 3CD/2DVD/1BD set features:

  • The remastered original album on CD 1;
  • The original double album sequence on CD 2;
  • 17 bonus tracks on CD 3 including the 1972 singles "Mary Had a Little Lamb," "Hi, Hi, Hi" and "C Moon;" the soundtrack cut and 1973 single "Live and Let Die," plus early mixes, outtakes ("Thank You, Darling," "Seaside Woman," "I Would Only Smile," "1882," "Jazz Street," "Tragedy," and "Best Friend"), and home recordings;
  • A DVD with music videos, an interview, and the first commercial release of the 1973 James Paul McCartney ATV television special; and
  • The never-before-seen The Bruce McMouse Show, featuring animation and footage from Wings' 1972 tour on both DVD and Blu-ray in 5.1 surround sound and high-resolution stereo.

PRE-ORDER FROM PAULMCCARTNEY.COM

Both of these sets are housed in the familiar slipcased, hardcover book-style format.  But if you still want more, PaulMcCartney.com has an exclusive bundle of both sets in a new slipcase plus an additional volume: Wings Over Europe.  This mini-set has a 20-track compendium of the band's performances on their 1972 European tour, plus a replica of the tour program and a 96-page book featuring Linda's photos.

Highlights CDs and vinyl versions will also be available.  The Wild Life vinyl has the original album on one LP and the 17-track Bonus Audio collection on the second LP, and the 2CD version has identical audio content.  Red Rose Speedway's 2 LP and 2CD iterations also have the remastered single album plus the Bonus Audio disc, but the double album version will be available as a standalone 2LP set, as well.

All formats will be available on December 7 from MPL/Capitol/UMe.  You can peruse the track listings and pre-order links below!

    Wow! I am surprised that these long awaited reissues were not held over until 2019, since there has been so much good Beatles related reissues this year. There is a lot of great material here to digest but I am so glad that there isn't any download only B-sides or outtakes like Flowers in the Dirt had (to me the only misstep so far in Paul's archive series). Looking forward to these. I have grown to appreciate the Wings albums more and more, and here's hoping that later 2019 will bring us London Town and Back to The Egg to complete the Wings reissues!

      Really, the live stuff is just about the only part of this (Well, that and the JPM TV special — which I haven’t seen in ages — and the McMouse film) that interests me.

      Always wanted to hear the early Wings shows (The bootlegs that exist are of poor quality), so that would be a treat. But not as part of bundle of two (IMO) lesser albums. Red Rose Speedway has its moments, I suppose, but Wild Life just isn’t very good.

      Wings Over Europe would’ve been a nice standalone, but alas (“WOE” indeed!) Maybe one day we’ll get a release of the college tour that preceded Wings Over Europe? Not gonna hold my breath.

        I doubt this highly..but then again there was the Russian album. Paul seems to enjoy tweaking his fans, doing limited releases then later on issuing them normally. So it's a long shot but not impossible thst wings over Europe might get a separate release. Being as wealthy as he is, you would think he would be kinder to fans who have supported him for 50 years.

    So happy that my favorite McCartney album from the 70s is the next one... so the mono mix of Wild Life (released in Brazil) has not been offered (which begs the question whether there has been a dedicated mono mix or if it was a fold-on from stereo).

      It's likely a fold, since the only album Paul mixed into mono on purpose was Ram… until he did three of the songs from Run Devil Run as a mono edition single.

        You could acquire the "remastered" book Eight Arms to Hold You and find out immediateley – it's an essential read for all Solo Beatles fans:

        My own hard copy is pretty worn after may years of reading … so the updated PDF was a welcome addition. It only covers the years up until around 2000, but WWL is of course well within this range.

    Looks like the deluxe package (with the live disc) is sold out on the McCartney site. Does anyone know if they're planning a second run?

    Seriously - does anybody at all know if there will be a "second edition" of the deluxe version with the live disc? I'd hate to get the other two deluxe version only to find out after the fact that the super deluxe will be available again.

      Paul's website now reads "First Edition - SOLD OUT," which certainly makes it a reasonable conclusion that a Second Edition is on the way. But mum's been the word from the McCartney camp, so we have no further information at this time. We'll report on any further developments.
