Visions of Paradise: Moody Blues' "In Search of the Lost Chord" Box Set Coming on Friday

Following last year's 2CD/DVD reissue of The Moody Blues' 1967 sophomore album Days of Future Passed, UMe is going even more deluxe for the Moodies' next album, 1968's In Search of the Lost Chord.  Tomorrow, November 2, the label will reissue that seminal classic as a 3CD/2DVD box comprising alternate mixes, previously unreleased tracks, and more.

Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas, Justin Hayward, John Lodge, and Graeme Edge, working with producer Tony Clarke, constructed In Search of the Lost Chord around various themes of search and exploration.  Unlike Days of Future Passed, on which the band was accompanied by the London Festival Orchestra, Lost Chord was more self-contained.  The Moodies played over thirty instruments on the album, drawing on their classical experience with the oboe and the cello, and incorporating Eastern influences with the sitar, the tabla, and the tambura.  A mellotron added to the album's rich, psychedelic sound.  Upon its release, the LP reached No. 5 in the U.K. and No. 23 in the U.S., but lacked a hit single to follow up "Nights in White Satin" from Days of Future Passed.  ("Voices in the Sky" did crack the top 30 on the U.K. Singles Chart.)

The first CD of the new box set has the original stereo mix of the album, plus the non-LP B-side "A Simple Game" and a clutch of mono mixes including the new-to-CD mono version of "Ride My See-Saw" and the previously unreleased mono "Legend of a Mind."  The second disc has an all-new stereo mix of the album plus the remastered Justin Hayward Vocal Mix of "A Simple Game."  The third disc boasts 15 bonus tracks, 14 of which were included on the 2006 hybrid SACD Deluxe Edition bonus disc.  (The fifteenth track here is "Gimmie a Little Something," previously available only on the Prelude box set and Caught Live + 5.)  The first DVD has the new 5.1 surround mix, new stereo mix, and remastered original stereo mix in 96/24 high resolution, while the second DVD offers seventeen tracks including BBC-TV's Colour Me Pop: In Search of the Lost Chord, broadcast on September 14, 1968, two months after the album's release; Ce Soir On Danse: The Moody Blues, broadcast by ORTF French TV on July 13 of that year, and Carte d'Or' - ORTF French TV, from October 29. Both of the French broadcasts are previously unreleased.  A 76-page book is included in the box set, with liner notes by compiler Mark Powell as well as rare images and memorabilia.

Additionally, UMe will reissue the original stereo mix on a 180-gram replica pressing and a psychedelic colored vinyl pressing available directly from UDiscoverMusic.com.  A standard CD will offer just CD 1 of the box set, with the remastered 1968 stereo mix and bonus tracks.

Look for the various iterations of In Search of the Lost Chord tomorrow, November 2, from UMe!
