BUY 4CD SET FROM AMAZON.COM

In the course of a career spanning seven decades, Tony Visconti has produced seminal albums in the classic rock genre including high profile collaborations with David Bowie, T. Rex, Gentle Giant, Strawbs, and Badfinger.  But Visconti's C.V. runs much deeper, from folk (Ralph McTell, Tom Paxton) to musical theatre (Elaine Paige) and everything in between (Sparks).  On October 20, Edsel will release the first large-scale tribute to Visconti's enormous musical legacy.  Produced by Tony Visconti has been curated by its subject.  It will be available in a variety of formats including 4 CDs, 6 LPs, and 2 LPs, with the 6LP edition including a signed print by Visconti.  The CD box boasts 77 tracks from the producer's distinguished career, while the LP box offers 73 and the highlights 2LP set has 30 songs.

The Brooklyn-born producer rose to prominence when he moved to London in the late 1960s, quickly hooking up with such up-and-coming talents as Marc Bolan and Tyrannosaurus Rex, David Bowie, and Badfinger.  He produced - and married - folksinger Mary Hopkin, and shepherded the career of Gentle Giant.  With T. Rex. Visconti would oversee eleven U.K. top ten singles in a row, while with Bowie, he would ultimately helm more than a dozen albums for the artist between 1969 and 2016.  Along the way, Visconti produced acclaimed albums from The Moody Blues, the Squeeze duo of Difford and Tilbrook, Thin Lizzy, The Boomtown Rats, Elaine Paige, Sparks, and others.

"This box set covers five and a half decades of my efforts in the art of making iconic recordings," Visconti notes in the press release.  "Some of it is familiar and some will have a eureka moment, 'I didn't know Visconti produced that one!' I am honored that Demon Records took on this enormous task."  Indeed, the set presents all facets of Visconti's varied career.

From the producer's early days in various capacities comes tracks by Joe Cocker (his era-defining "With a Little Help from My Friends"), The Move ("Mist on a Monday Morning," "Something"), Procol Harum ("Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone))," and Tyrannosaurus Rex ("Cat Black (The Wizard's Hat)."  The reborn T. Rex is represented with "Teenage Dream" and "Children of the Revolution," while Visconti's longest-term affiliation, with David Bowie, yields "Young Americans," "The Man Who Sold the World," "Memory of a Free Festival," and the deep cut "I Would Be Your Slave" from 2002's Heathen.  The non-chronologically-sequenced collection also takes in The Moody Blues' hit "Your Wildest Dreams" and tracks from U2 ("A Sort of Homecoming (Live)," Strawbs ("Forever," "Witchwood"), Badfinger/The Iveys ("Maybe Tomorrow," "Dear Angie"), Elaine Paige (Nine showstopper "Be on Your Own"), Mary Hopkin ("Streets of London," "Wrap Me in Your Arms"), The Dandy Warhols ("Keep Rock Bottom"), Manic Street Preachers ("Cardiff Afterlife"), Argent ("Time"), and many more.

Phil Kinrade has mastered all audio at AIR Mastering with Visconti's approval.  The 4CD version has an 80-page booklet with an introduction by Visconti, track-by-track notes by Mark Paytress, artist tributes, and previously unpublished photographs.  The 6LP vinyl edition is strictly limited to 1,000 units, with each LP pressed on 140-gram vinyl and a 60-page booklet included.  Artwork for both formats was designed by the Barnbrook studio.

All versions of Produced by Tony Visconti are due from Edsel on October 20.  You'll find the track listings and pre-order links below!

"Teenage Dream", from 1974 when he and Bolan were falling out, is such an odd choice to represent his T. Rex work. Perhaps there were rights issues, who knows. "Cat Black" is aces, though. I could have picked a half dozen songs from Mary Hopkin's Earth Song/Ocean Song that were more remarkable than her "Streets of London"- great song, but every folksinger and their grandmothers have recorded it. Unusual choices for Sparks too, when you had "Hospitality on Parade" and "Without Using Hands" to choose from as well.

Oh well, I'm just me, and Visconti is a legend, so what do I know. I'm glad to see something like this out there.
