Eyes On The Prize: John Mellencamp Collects Covers On New Album, "Other People's Stuff"

When John Mellencamp was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, Billy Joel remarked that, "People need to hear a voice like yours to echo the discontent that's in the heartland.  They need to hear stories about it.  They need to know that someone out there feels the way they do."  Though Mellencamp has never sought to be the voice of the Small Town, his stories of struggle, loss, perseverance, and love have spoken to the American heartland for more than forty years.

For his 24th album, though, Mellencamp applies his knack for storytelling to ten staples from the American music canon.  Entitled Other People's Stuff, the album of hand-picked covers old and new will be released on CD and digital December 7 from Republic Records.  A black vinyl pressing will on December 21.

The material for this new collection is culled mostly from his own albums, hard-to-find compilations, and documentary soundtracks.  However, Mellencamp recorded a brand-new version of "Eyes on the Prize," a standard that he had performed at The White House for the 2010 Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement at the request of President Obama.

"Most, if not all, of the songs on Other People's Stuff come from The Great American Songbook," Mellencamp said about the new collection.  "These are songs that have been recorded over the last 40 years of my career, but had never been put together as one piece of work. Now, they have."

Mellencamp's tribute to classic American music arrives on December 7 and you can hear the new single, "Eyes on the Prize," now.  You can find that song, as well as pre-order links and the full track listing for Other People's Stuff below.

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

It is unfortunate that on a rather short ten track CD compilation of older material, that his version of "Do Re Mi" from the 1988 "Folkways-Woody Guthrie Tribute" album was not included. Do you happen to know if the rights to this track could not be secured?

The short, 10 track collection is just unfortunate period. Lots of other cover tunes he’s done over the years that could’ve been part of this. The Folkways track being just one of them.

And if you already own Rough Harvest, Trouble No More, Human Wheels and Sad Clowns, well, you already have half of what’s included here.

I guess I will pass on this until I see it at a super cheap price in a year or two. Or I might just get one or two songs from itunes. I have all the other CDs alreay.

I thought this might be a (mostly) new album of covers. Trouble No More, Part II, in a sense. Or JM’s version of Seger’s Smokin’ OPs (“Other People’s Stuff”). Maybe a new album with a few odds and ends from soundtracks/benefit albums as bonus tracks. Oh well.

Missed opportunity whether new or old, as stated in my previous post.

I hate to use the word "cash grab" when talking about Mellencamp, but it is a pretty poor excuse for an "album". And I use the word loosely.
