In a winter tradition that's as reliable as any, UMe has released the latest in the annual copyright extension series, entitled Motown Unreleased: 1968. The two-part compilation will arrive to digital download and streaming services today, December 14. Between the two volumes, there's a whopping 88 tantalizing, previously unreleased gems from the Motown vault!

Motown heavy-hitters, soul superstars, and fan favorites abound on these two collections. There's a wealth of Stevie Wonder rarities, for example, from his cover of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and rare original recordings, to live material recorded at Detroit's Fox Theatre in December, 1968. Motown Unreleased: 1968 also includes an early version of The Four Tops' "Yesterday's Dreams", Marvin Gaye rarities, Billy Eckstine sessions, a handful of outtakes by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and a Christmas message from Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas also feature with their takes on "Ode To Billie Joe" and Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music." Cult favorite Blinky appears with a number of tracks, as well. Lesser-known acts from the Motown roster also feature, from The Utopians and The Originals, T & T, Willie Tyler, The Messengers, and actor Paul Petersen. While these artists never found widespread fame, their outtakes are frequently as fascinating as session tracks from bona fide Motown legends. It's what makes the Motown Unreleased series so compelling, as fans are able to travel back into The Snakepit at Hitsville, U.S.A. to hear gems from the vault.

All the music on Motown Unreleased: 1968 -- Part 1 has been sourced from the original mono masters, while the selections on Part 2 were sourced from the original session tapes and mixed for the first time ever by either Richard Hughes at Hughes Incorporated, or Obie O'Brien at Mixville U.S.A, with engineering by Mike Lawson. The result is a collection that not only delivers historically significant material, but also promises to sound great, too!

Motown fans can expect even more goodies the following week. Due to arrive on December 21 is an expanded edition of the classic Motown compilation, In Loving Memory. Though production for the album dates back to 1966, the album was completed in 1968 as a tribute to Loucye S. Gordy Wakefield. Wakefield was not only Berry Gordy's sister, but also the vice president of Motown Record Corporation and head of Billings & Collections and Jobete Music. The original 12-track album featured Motown heavyweights performing gospel standards in her honor.

The new digital collection is entitled Motown Gospel - In Loving Memory: Expanded Edition . It brings together the original album -- mixed from the mono master tapes -- plus earlier gospel recordings from Detroit circa 1965-1966, overdubs, rare stereo mixes, and three additional productions by George Fowler. Among the bonus material are ten tracks that previously appeared on Motown Unreleased: 1966, a handful of stray tracks from compilations over the last decade, and 10 previously unreleased tracks. With rarities from Marvin Gaye, Harvey Fuqua, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Martha Reeves, and more, this expanded edition of In Loving Memory delivers rare and unreleased material from many Motown legends.
