Rockin’ The Servers: Ben Folds’ Myspace Concert On The Way From Real Gone

February 7, 2019 By Sam Stone Leave a Comment

PRE-ORDER NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Ah, Myspace…for folks of a certain generation, the name alone brings back memories of friend requests from Tom, WordArt GIFs, and other mementos of pre-Facebook socialization.  But aside from all that, Myspace was (and, in some ways, still is) a haven for independent music.  Let’s rewind to 2006.  By August, over 100 million people were using the platform, and in October, the platform launched its first-ever live webcast.  The star?  Ben Folds.

Joined by an audience small enough to fit into his Tennessee home studio, Folds performed an hour-long, all-requests set.  The performance was full of great songs: cuts from his third album, Supersunnyspeedgraphic, a few tracks from his previous project, Ben Folds Five, a rousing sing-along “Army,” and a surprising cover of Dr. Dre’s “Bitches Ain’t Shit.”

Now, Real Gone Music brings the full concert to CD and LP for the first time ever with Ben Folds: Live at Myspace, due out on March 29.  The collection also includes five bonus tracks from the iTunes Originals series, a 2005 digital release.  The album is available on CD as well as in a two-disc, white vinyl set with a newly designed, custom gatefold jacket.  The 2-LP set is limited to only 1,000 copies.  But don’t expect this release to sound like it did coming out of your desktop speakers 13 years ago: Real Gone promises studio-quality sound, along with new liner notes by Bill Kopp with reminiscences from Ben Folds.

So get ready to travel back to 2006 and place your pre-orders for Ben Folds’ Live At Myspace.  While you’re there, take a look at the full track listing!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.
