SoulMusic Records’ anthologies of contemporary and classic R&B and soul bring together hits, rarities, and deep cuts to showcase the careers of overlooked and legendary performers.  Today (or next Friday, February 22 in the U.S.), the label continues the trend with a new Gladys Knight and The Pips collection, On And On: The Buddha/Columbia Anthology and a compilation of Regina Belle’s ’80s and ’90s material called Show Me The Way: The Columbia Anthology.

On And On is a hit-packed 2-CD set featuring Gladys Knight and The Pips’ post-Motown work on Buddah (on Disc One) and Columbia (on Disc Two).  With a whopping 37 tracks, the set is a definitive look at over a decade of great music.  The first disc features the timeless Jim Weatherly-penned classics “Midnight Train To Georgia” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” and 18 other Buddah-era tracks, including over a dozen charted singles and an alternate version of “Make Yours A Happy Home” from the soundtrack for Claudine.

Disc Two showcases the group’s five-year tenure at Columbia, which found them reuniting with writers-producers-Motown alumni Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson on hits like “Landlord” and “Taste of Bitter Love.”  The set also includes their version of the future pop standard “Wind Beneath My Wings,” as well as “You’re Number One (In My Book)” and “Save The Overtime (For Me).”

Together the two discs make up a comprehensive collection of Gladys Knight and The Pips favorites, bringing together the two eras for the first time.  With all their U.S. hits from that 12-year period, plus a 20-page booklet with new liner notes by Kevin Goins and new remastering by Nick Robbins, this set is sure to please any fan of the legendary Gladys Knight and The Pips.

Due for release on the same day is Regina Belle’s Show Me The Way: The Columbia Anthology The 2-CD collection brings together 29 tracks drawn from four albums that she recorded at the label between 1987 and 1995.  Among them are beloved tracks like “So Many Tears,” “Show Me The Way,” and “If I Could,” as well as choice covers of Philly soul classics (“I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “Love T.K.O.,” “You Make Me Feel Brand New”) and the No. 1 R&B hits “Baby Come To Me and “Make It Like It Was.”  Rounding out the set are duets with James “J.T.” Taylor (“All I Want Is Forever”), Johnny Mathis (“Better Together”), and Peabo Bryson (“I Can’t Imagine”), plus the 1987 “Cool Mix” version of “So Many Tears.”  While her popular (and Disney-controlled) Aladdin duet with Bryson, “A Whole New World,” is absent, these tracks showcase Belle’s vocal talents and her versatility as an interpreter of popular song.  The collection includes a 20-page booklet with new liner notes by Kevin Goins with quotations from producers and collaborators such as Nick Martinelli, Narada Michael Walden, and Barry Eastmond.
