Beautiful Strange: 'Ultimate Rave' Combines Two Prince Albums and One Live Concert

Over the last few months, Legacy Recordings has released a number of exciting Prince reissues on purple vinyl and CD as part of the label's initiative to bring Prince's post-1995 catalogue back in print.  Today, Legacy has announced the April 26 release of a new 2-CD/DVD set called Ultimate Rave.  The collection brings together two of Prince's albums from the turn of the new millennium:  Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic from 1999 and Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic, a hard-to-find 2001 remix album that was only available to members of Prince's NPG Music Club service.  The new collection will also include a DVD of the Rave Un2 The Year 2000 concert film, originally a pay-per-view special which saw Prince and an array of guests - including Morris Day and The Time, members of Sly and the Family Stone, Maceo Parker, and Lenny Kravitz - ringing in the new year with hits and fan favorites alike.  In addition to the three-disc set, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic and Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic will also be available individually on purple vinyl.  Those editions will also be available on April 26.

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic was initially conceived by Clive Davis (who'd lured Prince to a one-off deal with Arista Records) as a comeback album a la Santana's Supernatural.  The star-studded album included Chuck D., Eve, Ani DiFranco, Gwen Stefani, Larry Graham, Maceo Parker, and Sheryl Crow lending their talents. Highlights include the title track (left over from an abandoned 1988 project that featured material from the soundtracks to Batman and Graffiti Bridge) and the simmering R&B jam "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold."

In 2001, Prince released Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic.  The album was an update of its predecessor, with a modified track listing that added the previously unreleased track "Beautiful Strange," and new remixes and modified versions of the Un2 material.  In one of many examples of Prince embracing creative means of distribution, Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic was exclusively sold to members of his web-based NPG Music Club.  Legacy's new edition will mark the first wide reissue of this material and, thankfully, will be available through conventional means of music consumption.

Ultimate Rave will be released on April 26 from Legacy Recordings.   You can check out the full track listing of all the components and pre-order your copies with the links below!  Various bundles of the 2CD/DVD set, the purple vinyl releases, T-shirts, hoodies, and more are also available directly from Prince's online store.

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

There's so much more that could have been included, such as the EPK and promotional videos for the singles on the DVD, the commercial and promo remixes for the singles, footage from the press conference performance... One will always find reasons to complain about missing elements but the "Ultimate" title really isn't appropriate for this bundled release.

There is no notation if there has been any remastering done. Are these just the same masters (especially on the DVD) that were used before in a new package?
