UPDATED WITH ARTWORK AND TRACK LISTING: Grateful Dead Announce New LP Compilation "Sage and Spirit" For Record Store Day

February 28, 2019 By Sam Stone 2 Comments

The official Record Store Day list is set to drop any day now, but Grateful Dead has announced one of their RSD 2019 offerings a bit early:  a limited-edition compilation LP called Sage & Spirit, which will be available in independent record shops Saturday, April 13.

Sage & Spirit marks the latest chapter in the Grateful Dead's partnership with Dogfish Head Brewery, a company that's been a frequent supporter of Record Store Day.  The album boasts 10 tracks, a mix of live and studio cuts curated by the group's lead archivist, David Lemieux.  Among the songs included are "Sugar Magnolia," "Lost Sailor," "Saint of Circumstance," "High Time," "If I Had The World To Give", and, of course, "Sage and Spirit".  The two live tracks included on the compilation will be "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" from the band's famous Europe '72 live album.

"Choosing the songs for Sage & Spirit really didn't take long, but that's not to say I didn't put a lot of work into it," Lemieux said.  "My directive was, 'You're sitting on the porch. It's a summer day. You're drinking a Dogfish Head American Beauty and listening to the Dead,' and immediately I thought, 'I got it.'"

In addition, there will be an official Record Store Day poster based around the cover art for Sage & Spirit that will be available while supplies last.

Though side breaks have yet to be revealed, you can find the 10 tracks that make up the compilation below.  We'll be sure to keep readers updated on this release and others that are on the way for Record Store Day 2019 on April 13th!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

Loves me the Dead, but nothing different, rare, or out of the ordinary here.

I’ll be finding me some six-packs of Dogfish’s “American Beauty,” but there’s nothing exciting about this release.

Forgetting the fact that RSD is a joke with purposeful scarcity of product, and that people who buy CDs and not vinyl have no reason to participate anyhow.
