Varese Sarabande is setting sail with a wide CD release of Dave Grusin's score to The Goonies this summer! Recently a staple of Varese's vinyl catalog, it's the first time the music's been put on CD since a limited release in 2010.
A movie this offbeat - a gang of misfit kids in Oregon follow a pirate treasure map and face off against a family of crooks - had to have an interesting score, and The Goonies didn't disappoint. Grusin, known equally for his lengthy scoring career (The Graduate, Tootsie, On Golden Pond) and his work in the jazz field (sessions with Quincy Jones and Lee Ritenour, co-founding the GRP Records label), offered a light, sentimental touch to this zany adventure, directed by Richard Donner (Superman: The Movie), written by Gremlins scribe Chris Columbus (from a story by executive producer Steven Spielberg) and starring a swath of notable young actors, including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton. (Indeed, it's not hard to draw a line between The Goonies and modern fare like Stranger Things, in terms of setting and tone.)
This pressing, as assembled and remixed by album co-producer Mike Matessino in 2010, is unlimited, though it loses four alternate cues not used in the film. Still, it offers 70 minutes of terrific music that fans of '80s adventure films shouldn't miss. The album is due in stores June 21, and the full track list and order links are below!

I'm not one that usually buys scores but I might buy this because The Goonies might be my fave movie...I was even on vacation in Astoria, Oregon back in 1996 and saw the Goonie House...a lotta movies were shot there, not just Goonies, it's a cute, picturesque little town...the score is pretty good tho, the end theme is pretty sweet...I wish there was a complete songs soundtrack instead of just the 10-song Epic release which I have as a Japanese remaster...
