In 1969, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward united in the recording studio as Black Sabbath. The classic lineup created a heavy, powerful, primal rock sound, the influence of which is still felt fifty years on. On September 6, Rhino will celebrate Black Sabbath’s first lineup with The Vinyl Collection, 1970-1978.
Inside this new box set, listeners will find the band’s first eight studio albums – each pressed onto 180-gram black vinyl. The metal masters went multi-platinum with 1970 sophomore set Paranoid and scored three more consecutive platinum LPs with Master of Reality, Vol. 4, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. 1975’s Sabotage went gold. Taken together, these albums introduced some of the most enduring songs in hard rock such as “Black Sabbath,” “War Pigs,” “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” “Into the Voice,” “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,” “Never Say Die,” and more.
A new mono singles collection called Monomania also premieres here. The 9-track album features rare mixes and single edits that have been hard-to-find for decades including the edited versions of “Iron Man,” “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath,” and a previously unreleased edit of “Into the Void.” Monomania also includes a rare a radio ad released in 1970 to promote Black Sabbath. While the press release does not indicate this disc as “exclusive,” there have been no plans announced yet for a standalone release.. The set also comes with a 7″ single featuring “Evil Woman (Don’t Play Your Games With Me)” and “Wicked World,” a single that wasn’t originally released in North America. The box is rounded out by reproduction tour programs and other memorabilia.
