Once there was a way to get back home...
It was fifty years ago today that The Beatles were photographed on the zebra crossing outside EMI's Abbey Road studios. Soon, it would become the most identifiable of all crosswalks as it graced the cover of the album named after that storied location: Abbey Road. When it was released on September 26, 1969 in the U.K., Abbey Road shot straight to No. 1 and eventually became the fourth best-selling album of the decade there. Upon its U.S. release one week later, it met with further success, reaching No. 1 in its third week. All told, the album spent 11 non-consecutive weeks atop the U.S. chart, and 17 weeks in the U.K. (interrupted for just one week, by the Rolling Stones and Let It Bleed.) It proved to be the final true studio album statement of The Beatles; while the controversial Let It Be was released later, the majority of its sessions preceded those of Abbey Road.
Following in the footsteps of the anniversary editions of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beatles (released in 2017 and 2018, respectively), remixed, remastered, and expanded celebrations of Abbey Road will arrive on September 27 - almost 50 years to the day of the original release - from Apple/UMe.
The critical and commercial acclaim was a just reward for the work of John, Paul, George and Ringo in their farewell outing as a band. Harrison shone brightly with both "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun," while Lennon and McCartney crafted an intricate song suite with producer/arranger George Martin for the album's second side. Even Ringo got into the act with the infectious "Octopus' Garden." Abbey Road offered a fitting epitaph for The Beatles' career with the final line of "The End," the last proper song on the album: "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make." (The brief, 23-second "Her Majesty" appears as a hidden track, some 14 seconds after "The End.")
As with the past Anniversary Editions of Pepper and The Beatles, UMe/Apple will present Abbey Road like you've never heard it before. The most extravagant of the many configurations is the super deluxe edition with 3 CDs and a Blu-ray. The star is a new stereo remix by producer Giles Martin, mix engineer Sam Okell, and a team of audio restoration experts. The new mix is sourced from the original 8-track multitrack tapes and uses the original stereo mix as a template.
The box also includes 23 alternate takes, vintage mixes, and demos of the album's tracks, most of which are previously unreleased. Fans will also be treated to alternate takes of the non-album singles "Old Brown Shoe" and "The Ballad of John and Yoko," plus a solo guitar demo of "Goodbye" (a song given away to Mary Hopkin) and a 1969 stereo mix of the familiar "Come and Get It" demo prepared for Badfinger. These rarities are presented in chronological order to give listeners an unprecedented look at the creation of the album as it unfolded.
The Super Deluxe box's Blu-ray features a 24/96 DTS-HD 5.1 surround mix, a 24/96 high-res version of the new stereo mix, and a newly created mix in the Dolby Atmos format being championed by Universal. The audio will be complemented by a luxurious 12x12 hardcover book with a new foreword by Paul McCartney, an introduction by Giles Martin, an essay by David Hepworth, and track-by-track annotations by Kevin Howlett. Over 80 of Linda McCartney's previously unseen photos will premiere plus outtakes from the cover photo session. The book is also filled with memorabilia images like handwritten lyrics, sketches, and a George Martin score; correspondence, recording sheets, and tape boxes; and original advertisements. Audio will be available for download or streaming in standard and high-resolution formats.
The 40 tracks from the super deluxe edition will also be pressed in a beautiful 180-gram 3-LP set, as well. That collection will be presented in a lift-off box with the stereo mix on one disc in a sleeve replicating the original album, and the rarities in a newly designed gatefold sleeve featuring an alternate shot from the album cover session and an insert with sleeve notes. A slimmer 2-CD Deluxe Edition will boast the new mix plus 17 of the session highlights (one for each song on the album). Lastly, 1-CD, digital/streaming, and 1-LP editions will also be made available of just the new stereo mix. The 1-LP will be pressed as a picture disc with the album's famous artwork on the front. The LPs will be half-speed mastered at QRP.
Excited? To get you even further in the mood, the label has released a new EP of "Something" including the new stereo mix, the studio demo (with different overdubs than as heard on Anthology), and a strings-only mix. You can enjoy it at all digital service providers, along with new promotional films for the collections (which you'll find below).

Amazon US links not working

Sorry about that, Luigi! Amazon should be populating the links today; please check back later! Thank you!

By far my favorite Beatles album. Can't wait to hear it!
Paul says
Up on Amazon, full price, hope they drop between now & 9/27. Other vendors cheaper.
Ken says
.. will the LP Box contain the book?
Mark H. says
A bit stingy on bonus tracks on the 3 CD set - it appears to be another example of limiting CD running time to the length of a vinyl LP. 17 tracks on the main disc and only 23 total on the two Sessions discs. There's a lot more that could have been put on.
But it's still on my list.
Dave says
I'll likely end up getting the 2-CD edition. Once again, Apple/Capitol just can't help themselves playing around with content among the various editions.
I do not NEED the Blu-Ray disc. I don't have anything capable of decoding Dolby Atmos, and while a surround sound version might be nice, I doubt I'd listen very often. Same thing goes for the book; nice but not essential *to me.*
Maybe one of my friends will end up getting the full super deluxe set. We'll see.
Ben says
For me, not a patch on Revolver or Rubber Soul. But still The Beatles, so what can you say?!
Randy says
Really wish there had been some actual video content. I know there is footage of the photoshoot (crossing the street and others). I know a lot of this was covered on Anthology, but even a short doc on the remastering process with Giles and perhaps a little something from Paul and Ringo would have been cool. This is too important an album to simply get surround sound and Dolby Atmos. I have the other two Super Deluxe and getting this one too.
Obviously all the early buzz is that the "Let It Be" Super Deluxe next year will be massive what with Peter Jackson recutting the film and whatnot. Can hardly wait...
Wim Kombrink says
Am I right to suppose that the 3LP will be half speed-mastered and pressed at optimal, while the 1LP-version won't be half speed-mastered and pressed at QRP?
