Sugar Man, Won’t You Hurry: Classic Rodriguez Albums Return to Vinyl, CD, and Digital

PRE-ORDER FROM AMAZON.COM

Sixto Rodriguez, known professionally by his last name alone, was something of an enigma before Malik Bendjelloul’s Academy Award-winning documentary Searching For Sugarman presented Rodriguez to the mainstream once again.  Rodriguez’s two Sussex Records releases – 1970’s Cold Fact and 1971’s Coming From Reality – became cult classics once more in the wake of the film’s release.  Last Friday, August 30, after years out of print, the two titles returned to vinyl, alongside CD and digital configurations.

In addition to the CD and 180-gram black vinyl editions, each album is also available on color vinyl: Cold Fact  as a picture disc that replicates the front cover image of Rodriguez floating in a crystal ball, and Coming From Reality  on “bottle-clear” color vinyl, referencing the bottle on the front cover.

PRE-ORDER COLOR VINYL VARIATIONS FROM UDISCOVER

The CD issue of Coming From Reality boasts three bonus tracks: “Can’t Get Away,” “I’ll Slip Away,” and “Street Boy.”  The trio of tracks were produced by Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey, who had produced Cold Fact, and first appeared on Light In The Attic’s 2009 CD reissue.

Though Rodriguez’s career has seen a resurgence since the release of the documentary, it’s been several years since his two original albums have been in print on vinyl.  Now, fans and newcomer have the chance to revisit his hard-hitting work once more.  So take a look at the track listing below and place your orders now!

  1. It doesn’t get much better than the prior CDs on Light In The Attic, can anyone convince me why I need to buy these if I have those? Anything new or improved here?

    1. My understanding is this is a matter of a new label acquiring these titles and getting their version in print. No new tracks here, but a worthwhile move business-wise by UMe. One difference: these new CDs will be in jewel cases. Not having heard these new editions yet, I can’t A/B against my LITAs but I hope to have the chance soon. Thanks for reading!

  2. LITA mastered Cold Fact from a safety copy of the master tape, and it sounded fine. No tape source for Coming From Reality could be located. Hopefully one has been found.
