Real Gone Music has recently announced two new vinyl reissues coming out this Friday, September 13. One is from the Paisley Underground genre and the other is an experimental effort combining reggae and electronic music.
First up, is Rain Parade's Emergency Third Rail Power Trip. The band was part of the Paisley Underground movement in 1980s California which combined psychedelia with vocal harmonies, owing a debt to artists like The Byrds and Love from the 1960s. The Bangles are the best-known group to be a part of this genre. Rain Parade was founded in 1981 by college roommates Matt Piucci and David Roback. Roback's brother Steven would soon join and eventually so would Will Glenn and Eddie Kalwa. They would release one single on the Llama in 1982 before having their album debut in 1983 on the Enigma/Zippo label: Emergency Third Rail Power Trip. The ethereal but downbeat LP didn't dent mainstream charts that much (although it would hit No. 5 on the U.K. Indie survey) and Dave Roback would depart the group (eventually forming Mazzy Star). The remaining foursome would next release an EP also on the Enigma/Zippo label in 1984: Explosions in the Glass Palace. The group (with more departing and new members) would then sign with Island and release a live and studio album before disbanding in 1986. Steven Roback and Matt Piucci reunited with some former members and began performing as Rain Parade again in 2012. Real Gone released Emergency Third Rail Power Trip on CD back in 2017, paired with the follow-up EP. This new vinyl marks the album's first LP reissue in over 30 years and its first vinyl reissue ever in the United States. It comes in Red & Yellow Starburst vinyl and is limited to 1,000 copies.
Next is the Star Trek album by The Vulcans on the Trojan label from 1972. Obviously the group and album take its name from the classic sci-fi TV series, but the resulting LP has little to do the show. The brainchild of the producer-team of Joe Sinclair, Webster Shrowder, and Des Bryan, the idea was to create an easy-listening reggae album in the style of 1968's Switched on Bach. They handed classic Trojan rhythm tracks to prog-rocker Ken Elliot (formerly of the group Second Hand), who proceeded to lay down ARP-2600 synthesizer lines over them. The result is unique to say the least; it is described in the press release as "a B-movie soundtrack listened to on laughing gas." Star Trek did not perform commercially but the idea did resurface the next year by the same group on the album Interstellar Reggae Drive, credited to Colonel Elliot and the Lunatics. The LP was reissued on CD in 2002, with some extra tracks added in. Real Gone's new reissue is the first-ever vinyl re-release and features the original artwork and comes on maroon vinyl, limited to 1,000 copies.
